Scouting Reports

Perfect Game

Adam Maier, RHP

We’ve got to start with the slider because it is pretty ridiculous. It sat 80-83 with big-time lateral break and depth. It featured spin regularly in the 2900s, topping out a tick over 3100. Buckled knees even the second time through the lineup when hitters had already seen it. He backdoored to lefties, and doubled up with the pitch multiple times. Some similarities to the body and the slide piece to Kevin Kopps where he could just live off the slider, but Maier’s fastball at 91-94 (also with plus spin) shows exceptional darting life with run and sink to the arm side. He doubled up with the changeup later into his outing to a lefty at 86, also getting a strikeout on the change. Showed control over command, especially early with a few pitches getting away from him (was a cool San Diego night which could have contributed), hitting a few batters but walking nobody in 5 frames and command got better as he settled in. The stuff was loud, swing-and-miss stuff, fun to watch.

Adam Maier, RHP, University of British Columbia (2022) | Yarmouth-Dennis

One of the breakout stars of the Cape, Maier showed a plus slider but a fairly pedestrian fastball and some control issues in my first two looks, but in his fourth start of the year versus Orleans he was electric. Showing increased velocity and feel for his changeup.

Semi-windup, high leg lift to drop-and-drive, gets deep into his glutes; moderate arm action length, delivering the ball from a mid three-quarter slot. Good pitcher’s body with average athleticism and fluid, efficient mechanics that he repeats well.

Speaking of the stuff jumping, Maier was 89-91 mostly in my first look. The velocity jumped to 90-93 mph in my second but in the third look he came out throwing 94-96 mph sinkers, touching 97 mph once. It dropped down to 91-94 mph the second time through but it was a better fastball. In addition to that, all of his secondaries played up.

His slider was a mid-80s frisbee running up his spin rate to 3030 rpms and a high of 24 inches of horizontal break. A true sweeper. The 7/17 start was also a departure from his typical sequencing as he used the slider more than the fastball, seeing a 41% usage rate. A true plus pitch.

His changeup is sold with good arm speed, sitting 86-87 and generating whiffs with late run and tumble. He shows confidence in the pitch as well, using it in any count versus left handed hitters.

A strong three-pitch mix that features a ground ball-driving sinker, a bat-missing sweeper, and a changeup that keeps lefties off balance.

Age At Draft: 20.6

Maier didn’t play last spring thanks to the pandemic — University of British Columbia didn’t play the 2021 season due to restrictions from COVID — but he pitched for the Canadian Junior National Team in high school and impressed this summer in the Cape Cod League. He posted a 4.56 ERA in 25.2 innings for Yarmouth-Dennis and showed a solid three-pitch mix including a fastball up to 94-95 mph, a potentially above-average slider with big spin and a change up that generated a solid number of whiffs. He’s not the most physically imposing arm at 6-foot-1, 205 pounds, but he seems to have established himself as the top Canadian prospect in the class—a rare college demographic for that honor.

Best Slider: Adam Maier, RHP, Oregon | Yarmouth-Dennis (2022)

Why: A 2900 rpm frisbee that was up to >22 of horizontal sweep that he landed in the zone frequently with a 64% strike rate this summer. What makes the pitch so effective is his ability to generate ground balls (55% ground ball rate) and miss bats (46% whiff rate, 17% swinging strike) while showing strong feel and command. Sitting 83-85 mph, Maier peppered the glove side with consistency. The pitch became the focal point of his arsenal in his third start, and he began to throw the slider with greater regularity than his fastball. There were several contenders as this was one of the more contentious categories, with plenty of viable candidates with many listed below.
