Canada may get another shot at Olympic medals in baseball and softball, but the earliest the sport can be back is in 2020.

A new international organization, the World Baseball Softball Confederation, has been established specifically to get these two sports back into the Olympics. The idea is that a joint effort would make a stronger impression on the International Olympic Committee, and promote the possibility of using joint facilities for the two sports.

Baseball was a medal sport from 1992 to 2008. Canada’s best finish was fourth in 2004.

Baseball was voted out of the Olympics in 2005, and the sport came up one vote short of retention. MLB’s unwillingness to allow their players to participate and baseball’s lack of compliance with anti-doping standards were factors in the vote.

The IOC will make a decision on whether to add these two sports in 2013.
