The Toronto Blue Jays entered the start of the 2012 season full of promise and optimism.
The Blue Jays posted a franchise best Grapefruit league record and the inception of the extra wild card spot seemed to play right into the Jays hand. The Blue Jays squad boasted top notch talent and a youthful exuberance and it seemed very realistic that the Jays could keep par with the big boys of the American League East.
Then the season started …
What proceeded to happen over the next 5 months could not have been scripted even in the minds of the most skeptical of Jay’s fans.
The likes of Sergio Santos, Brandon Morrow, Kyle Drabek, Drew Hutchison, Dustin McGowan, Jesse Litsch and Luis Perez all suffered serious season ending injuries with the exception of Morrow who is poised to return to the Jays rotation after rehabbing from a left oblique strain that has kept him shelved since June 11.
Many of the aforementioned pitchers will be fortunate if they are even healthy enough to return sometime during the 2013 season. The assortment of arm troubles and shoulder injuries decimated not only the Jays starting rotation but also sent the bullpen into disarray.
The injuries sent the Jays brass frantically searching the minor league ranks for rookies and veteran free agents from the waiver wire heap pile in an attempt to gobble up some innings.
Not to be outdone the Blue Jays position players decided to get into the injury fray when Jose Bautista suffered a freak wrist injury after crushing a ball foul.
The Bautista injury all but sealed the Jays 2012 season fate even for the most optimistic of fans. J.P. Arencibia, Colby Rasmus, Adam Lind and Brett Lawrie all followed suit on the infirmary wait list with a various assortment of injuries and ailments.
Due to rash of injuries the Blue Jays have deployed nine players who have made their major league debut this season.
The likes of Moises Sierra, Anthony Gose, Adieny Hechavarria, Yan Gomes, Chad Jenkins, Sam Dyson, Aaron Loup, Evan Crawford and Hutchison have all made their respective MLB debuts this season.
The Jays have utilized a franchise record 32 pitchers to date and 51 different players have suited up for the Jays this season.
Hopefully, the Jays have used up their disabled list visits and will be smooth sailing come 2013.
In the meantime sit back and enjoy the kids as they audition for playing time next season.
