Happy Canada Day, our 15th annual lineup

By Bob Elliott

Happy Canada Day!

A long time ago we wondered what a mythical All-Canadian team would look like lumped together clad in red and white.

Our first Canada Day lineup was selected the day the Boston Red Sox trio of Rolando Arrojo, Rod Beck and Derek Lowe blanked the Blue Jays and Chris Carpenter 4-0 on two hits (singles by Shannon Stewart and Alex Gonzalez) in 2001.

The Canuck lineup that year may have had more pop than the Jays displayed that day with the likes of Larry Walker, Matt Stairs, Corey Koskie and Rob Ducey to go with arms like Ryan Dempster, Chris Reitsma, Eric Gagne, Paul Quantrill and Rheal Cormier.

The idea was long before the Pan Am Games were booked for Ajax and Canada was preparing to defend its gold medal in the Pan Ams July 11,

And even before World Baseball Classic was born in 2006.

This is our 15th annual Canada Day lineup and as always our MVDs -- Most Valuable Doctors -- Jason Smith, Allan Gross, Ron Taylor and Marc Philippon have been tending to injuries.

Commissioner Fergie Jenkins has fought off farm directors and meddlesome assistant general managers and GMs by his mere presence.

The result: everyone available to play will play and everyone is healthy.

Our team is 14-0 going into Wednesday’s matinee.

Manager Ernie Whitt has Ryan Dempster in year two of retirement after being the anchor of our Canada Day team for 13 consecutive years, including six opening day starts, along with Stubby Clapp, Denis Boucher, Jason Bay and Walker, Canada’s greatest hitter, on his coaching staff.

Executives Doug Melvin and Gord Ash of the Milwaukee Brewers along with Alex Anthopoulos and Andrew Tinnish of the Toronto Blue Jays supplied Whitt with enough analytic print outs to wall paper the dugout.

Before we go down to the field for Donald S. Cherry to throw out the ceremonial first pitch, it should be pointed out our pool is not as large as a year ago when 19 Canucks had appeared on major-league rosters by the July 1.

Yet June was a good month with 30 Canadians selected including a record-equalling 10 in the first 10 rounds led by Ontario Blue Jays first baseman Josh Naylor, who went 12th over-all in North America. The highest ever Canadian position player selected was given a $2.25 Million US bonus by the Miami Marlins.

A total of 13 Canucks have appeared on major-league rosters this season, 74 in the minors (including 15 who have triple-A time) and 34 in independent ball.

We’ve chosen from deeper talent pools, but we’re glad we’re not picking the 1984 Canada Day team when there were only two Canadians in the majors: Terry Puhl and Doug Frobel.

The lineup:
Leading off is Oakland A’s third baseman Brett Lawrie of Langley, BC in his sixth start, after starting at second last year. With an RBI triple on Monday, Lawrie is only nine RBIs behind Josh Donaldson heading into Tuesday night’s play.

Etobicoke’s own, Canada’s highest-paid athlete, Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds in his eighth start and 10th appearance. Votto volunteered to play left a year ago when he looked at the options at first base and DH, deciding it was best for the mythical team.

New Westminster, BC’s Justin Morneau, the Colorado Rockies first baseman, is in his 13th start and the senior member of the roster. Morneau won the National League batting title last season before being sidelined with concussion-like syndrome after only 27 games.

Making his third Canada Day start and hitting clean up is DH Freddie Freeman of the Atlanta Braves. He’s WBC-eligible as his parents grew up in Windsor. Freeman wanted in on the 2013 WBC, but there wasn’t any room with Votto and Morneau splitting time at first and DH. And Freeman says he can’t play the outfield or third.

Next is Montrealer Russell Martin of the Jays. Martin is behind the plate after starting at third last year. It is Martin’s 10th start and his 11th selection.

Batting sixth is Jays’ Michael Saunders of Victoria, BC who will be in right field making his seventh start and eighth appearance on our Canada Day roster. Saunders knee is healthy as it was in the spring of the 2013 WBC when he won MVP honors for the Phoenix pool.

Next is Mississauga centre fielder Dalton Pompey in his Canada Day debut. Pompey started in centre with the Jays as part of the six rookies on the Opening Day roster at Yankee Stadium, was demoted to Buffalo and appears to have found his stroke at double-A New Hampshire.

Then in the eighth spot comes second baseman Peter Orr of Richmond in his seventh start and 10th appearance. Orr is the senior Canuck in terms of service time in the minors and is at triple-A Colorado Springs in the Milwaukee Brewers system.

Hitting ninth in his third Canada Day start is shortstop Sean Jamieson of Simcoe, Ont. from double-A Mobile in the Arizona Diamondbacks system.

And on the mound will be lefty James Paxton of Ladner, BC, Paxton will be making his first start in his third selection.

Port Dover’s John Axford of the Rockies will close for his third year and is in his sixth year on the team.

Also in a rotation: Guelph lefty Scott Diamond at triple-A Durham and Jared Mortensen, of Abbotsford, BC at Double A Montgomery both in the Tampa Bay Rays system; Andrew Albers from North Battleford, Sask. and Jeff Francis of North Delta, BC both at Buffalo.

Bridging the gap to Axford are Aldergrove BC’s Scott Mathieson, Yomiuri Giants; plus triple-A arms at Buffalo, Regina’s Dustin Molleken, at Columbus, Calgary’s James Henderson at Colorado Springs, Mississauga’s Chris Leroux, Adam Loewen of Surrey, BC and Gatineau’s Phillippe Aumont, who were all at Lehigh Valley.

On the bench are triple-A catchers George Kottaras of Markham, at Charlotte; London infielder   Jamie Romak at triple-A Reno; Langley’s Jordan Lennerton, triple-A Toledo, plus, Vancouver outfielder Jim Adduci of the Lotte Giants in Korea.

Those of you who are into real life, real drama and TSN Turning points in must-win situations and not mythical teams can see the likes of Orr, Jamieson, Albers, Mortensen, Francis, Leroux, Aumont and Lennerton at President’s Choice Park in Ajax.

So now let’s go down to the field where Cherry, the most Canadian of them all, will unveil a slider usually thrown only from the shadows in the twilight of Kingston’s Cricket Field.

And a Happy Canada Day to you too.
