July 22 Minor League Report

Blue Jays from Away
With Kazakhstan and a long, overnight travel-day behind me (still waiting for my bags to catch up though), I’m back in Berlin, where Blue Jays from Away got started. If I have the time and I’m feeling nostalgic enough, you’ll see a reminiscence post from me.

Buffalo Bisons 4, Syracuse Chiefs 3
Syracuse Chiefs to mount a comeback but Bobby Korecky hung on to allow Daniel Norris to pick up the win. Norris went 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts, throwing 99 pitches including 61 for strikes. He was relieved by Greg Burke who stranded Norris’s runner while Miguel Castro and Chad Jenkins followed with scoreless innings before Bobby Korecky gave up a solo home run in the ninth but nailed down the save.

Matt Hague added two hits and an RBI while Caleb Gindl hit a two-RBI triple. Dalton Pompey also tripled and walked, scoring once.

Roster Notes: The Blue Jays signed Ty Kelly to a minor league deal and assigned him to Buffalo while releasing Joel Pineiro. The Bisons activated Andrew Albers from the temporarily inactive list as he returned from the Pan-Am Games.

Player of the Game: Gindl and Pompey

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 0, Harrisburg Senators 13
Harrisburg hammered the Fisher Cats as the visitors suffered a rare loss in July. Taylor Cole followed up several good starts with a forgettable one, giving up six runs on nine hits in three innings. Luis Perez allowed two runs in 2 2/3 innings while Scott Barnes gave up five more runs in 2/3 of an inning. Chad Girodo allowed both of Barnes’s inherited runners to score and Danny Barnes pitched a perfect ninth to finish the game. The batters were held to just six hits with Roemon Fields getting two singles and swiping two bases.

Dunedin Blue Jays 5, Bradenton Marauders 8
Jeremy Gabryszwski didn’t have his best game, allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings before Alonzo Gonzalez gave up two more runs despite striking out three in 2 1/3 innings. Arik Sikula blew the save, giving up two more runs in the eighth inning.

The offense showed more life with Rowdy Tellez knocking four singles, stealing a base and driving in a run. Richard Urena had three hits and an RBI while Mitch Nay was 2/5 and Mike Reeves was 2/2 with two walks, two runs, a double and two RBI.

Roster Notes: Matt Smoral was activated off the DL and assigned to Bluefield.

Player of the Game: Reeves and Tellez

Lansing Lugnuts 4, Bowling Green Hot Rods 2
The Lugnuts doubled up Bowling Green for the second game in a  row, making a winner out of Starlyn Suriel. Suriel was excellent, going seven innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on nine hits and one walk with six strikeouts. Phil Kish earned the save with two perfect innings.

David Harris was 2/2 with a sacrifice fly, a double and a run while Alex Maldonado was 2/4 with a double and an RBI.

Vancouver Canadians 4, Eugene Emeralds 2
The Canadians pulled off another two-run victory over Eugene despite a rocky start from 2015 first-rounder Jonathan Harris who allowed two runs on two hits and two walks over 2 1/3 innings with three strikeouts. Daniel Young earned the win with 2 2/3 innings of one-hit ball while Stuart Holmes, Sean Ratcliffe and Andrew Case combined for four innings of scoreless, two-hit ball. Gunnar Heidt led the offense with a 2/4 game while Rolando Segovia was 1/2 with a double and a walk, driving in a run.

Player of the Game: Segovia and Heidt

Bluefield Blue Jays 6, Greeneville Astros 5
The Blue Jays beat Greenefield, getting a solid performance out of Daniel Lietz who threw five innings of two-run, two-hit ball, walking one and striking out four. Matt Smoral returned to Bluefield and pitched a perfect sixth while Alberto Guzman struck out three over two innings, earning the win. Zach Rodgers made it a close game, giving up three runs in the ninth. Yeltsin Gudino (2/4, 2B, BB, R), D.J. McKnight (2/5, RBI), Juan Tejada 92/4, BB, R) and Freddy Rodriguez (2/3, 2 R, 3B, BB) all had two hits but Gabe Clark had the big blast, going 1/5 with a two-run home run.

Roster notes: Matt Smoral was sent down to Bluefield after coming off the DL.

GCL Blue Jays 0, GCL Phillies 1
Game suspended in the first inning.

DSL Blue Jays 6, DSL D-backs 1
With only four hits, the Blue Jays took advantage of four D-backs errors to beat Arizona’s DSL team handily. Francisco Rodriguez had two of the hits, scoring twice and driving in a run. Enmanuel Moreta was 1/2 with a walk and two runs while Sam Buelens was 0/3 but walked and drove in a run. Guadalupe Chavez was excellent on the mound, surrendering just one unearned run on five hits and one walk, striking out seven. Joel Espinal allowed just one hit and two walks in three innings, picking up the save.
