Tyler O'Neill, CBN POW, Week IV

By George Farelli
Canadian Baseball Network

Another year.

Another set of fences to try and clear.

Tyler O’Neill had success going deep for the rookie-Class Arizona League Mariners in Peoria, Az., at class-A Everett’s Memorial Stadium in Everett, Wash., at class-A Clinton’s Ashford University Field in Clinton Iowa, at class-A Bakersfield and Sam Lynn Ballpark in Bakersfield, Calif.

So why should playing in the double-A Southern League for the Jackson Generals and hitting at The Ballpark at Jackson be any different for O’Neill.

O’Neill (Maple Ridge, BC) hit .417 for the week (5-for-12) with two homers and six RBIs to win Canadian Baseball Network Player of the Week honors as the best of the 51 Canucks in the minors.

How his week that was went ... as O’Neill ...

_ Doubled in a 6-3 win over the Mobile BayBears before 2,137 fans at The Ballpark at Jackson. He doubled to left leading off the second and scored the game’s first run.

_ Singled in three at-bats and knocked in a run in a 3-2 loss to Mobile in the first game of the doubleheader. He hit a line drive single to left in the sixth cutting the Mobile lead to 3-1.

_ Was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer in a 5-0 win over Mobile. O’Neill hit a two-run homer to left to boost the Jackson lead to 5-0 before 3,792 fans.

_ Was 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs in a 6-4 win against Mobile. He homered, his sixth,   to centre with two men on board for a 3-0 lead,

O’Neill is hitting .313 this season with two doubles, a triple, six homers and 18 RBIs in 22 games. He has a .961 OPS.

In this his fourth season in the minors, O’Neill, the former Langley Blaze star, is hitting .269 with 39 doubles, six triples, 52 homers and 160 RBIs in 217 games. He has an .858 OPS and of the 52 homers, his best year was last year when he hit 32 in 106 games.

In his second start on May 1st a 1-0 win in 12 Innings over Durham Bulls, he threw seven scoreless innings surrendering two base hits and striking out three Durham hitters, but again was not involved in the final decision.

After having missed the entire 2014 and 2015 seasons due to injury, the progress made thus far in 2016 bodes well for his future.   These two starts improved his overall record with the Indians in Triple A International League to 2-0 with a 1.19 ERA.
