A quick look at his minor league numbers and his organizational changes, one would think that no one wanted Jason Bay.
Undrafted as a college junior ... selected in the 22nd round as a senior ... four different organizations in his four seasons as a pro.
A 22nd round senior draft from Gonzaga University is a merely an organizational draft pick.
Tim Leiper remembers it differently.
“In 2001 we had our meetings near the end of spring to decide who went where,” said the former Montreal Expos minor league manager. “A lot of managers in those conference rooms fought to get Jason Bay on their team. What was not to like about him?”
Leiper wound up with Bay (Trail, BC) at class-A Jupiter in 2001, along with Cliff Lee, Carl Pavano, Brad Wilkerson, Terry Jones, Curtis Pride and Wilson Valdez, all future major leaguers.
The Expos knew they had someone who could play as the scouts say, but what happened? Why was Bay not a fixture with the Washington Nationals when the Expos moved south? Why did he bounce around before finding a home with the Pittsburgh Pirates, being dealt to the Boston Red Sox in 2008 and now becoming the newest hope for the New York Mets?
“It wasn’t that we didn’t want him, it was that other teams wanted him too,” Leiper recalled.
Current Mets general manager Omar Minaya ran the Expos in 2002 and at the end of spring training sent Jim Serrano and Bay to the Mets for back-up outfielder Lou Collier.
After 103 games at class-A St. Lucie and double-A Binghamton, Steve Phillips dealt Bobby Jones, Josh Reynolds and Bay to the San Diego Padres for Jason Middlebrook and Steve Reed in a deadline deal.
Growing up in the zinc mining town of Trail, eight miles north of the Idaho border, Bay reached the Little League World Series in 1990. That year, seven Canadians played in the majors: Terry Puhl (Melville, Sask.) of the Houston Astros; Steve Wilson (Victoria, BC) with the Chicago Cubs, Kirk McCaskill of the California Angels; Kevin Reimer (Enderby, BC) with the Texas Rangers; Rob Ducey (Cambridge, Ont.) with the Toronto Blue Jays, Mike Gardiner (Sarnia, Ont.) with the Seattle Mariners and an Expo rookie named Larry Walker (Maple Ridge, BC).
In 2009, there were 22 members of the invisible minority in the majors, led by Justin Morneau (New Westminster, BC) of the Minnesota Twins and Bay.
While Morneau, like first rounders Adam Loewen (Surrey, BC) and Jeff Francis (North Delta, BC) played in the British Columbia Premier League as high schoolers, Bay did not as Trail did not have a team in Canada’s best elite league.
Not a big-time recruit out of high school, Bay’s journey took him to North Idaho College for two seasons where he was converted from a second baseman to an outfielder. Then it was on to Gonzaga where Bing Crosby attended.
After being selected 645th over-all out of Gonzaga in 2000 by the Expos Bay, reported to single-A Vermont.
Bay had was in his third game with the Padres belt when he was struck by an Elmer Dessens pitch in Arizona and suffered a broken wrist, A year later the Padres shipped Oliver Perez, Cory Stewart and Bay to the to Pirates for Brian Giles, Aug. 26, 2003.
“I liked San Diego, but I don’t really think I had anywhere to go there,” Bay said. “They had three good outfielders and I wasn’t going to beat out Giles in left field if I hadn’t been in this trade.”
With Sammy Sosa and the Chicago Cubs in a September race, Bay made news Sept. 19 in Pittsburgh.
“I was trying to feel my way along. I’m sure the Pirates were trying to figure out exactly what they had in me,” Bay remembered. “I drove in eight runs that night in the first game of a doubleheader. Even though we lost 10-9, we were facing one of the best pitchers in the game in Carlos Zambrano.”
Bay hit a grand slam in the second; a two-run homer in the fourth and a two-run double in the fifth
“It was one of those nights I was seeing the ball and my confidence was high,” Bay said. “It was an important game for me because I proved to myself that I could compete.
“Until then, I didn’t know for sure. To look at the box score in the paper the next morning and see eight RBIs next to my name was huge.”
In 2004 his season was super sized as he hit .282 with 26 homers and 82 RBIs to win the National League rookie of the year honours. He also won the Tip O’Neill Award given annually by the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame to the top Canuck in the sport. He won the honour in 2009 for a third time.
“The names on the Tip O’Neill trophy are impressive,” Bay said in a release. “Canadians are very patriotic people and the support I’ve had throughout is tremendous incentive to keep producing next year.”
Bay also received the Players Choice Award as the 2004 outstanding rookie and was named top NL rookie by The Sporting News.
“Score one for the good guys,” said Greg Hamilton who coached the Canadian National Junior Team in 1996 when Bay played second in a lineup which featured future big-leaguers such as catcher Pete Laforest, Steve Green and lefty reliever Eric Cyr.
Bay grew up in a town dominated by the smelter, where his father went to work there the day he graduated high school, was passed over by the Jays, traded by the Expos, was the most recognizable Pirate in Steel City and now a home run bat the Mets and GM Minaya will look to in 2010.
The Mets locked up Bay with a four-year $66-million deal (average annual salary of 16.5 million) the highest contract ever for a Canadian. Morneau signed a six-year $80 million deal (average annual salary of $13.3 million) in 2008.
The Mets have locked up the most famous Canadian Bay since Hudson’s.

Wanna play for Canada? Coach Todd Plaxton (Regina, Sask.) former Baseball Canada coach of the year and assistant coach Cavanagh Whitely (Prince George, BC) of the British Columbia Thunderbirds are rounding up players to tryout for Team Canada at the upcoming World University Games in Tokyo, Japan.
The Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) and Baseball Canada are preparing to send a team to the fifth World University Baseball Tournament July 29th-Aug. 8th in Japan.

They are looking for any elite student-athletes currently participating in post secondary baseball in Canada or the United States to indicate their interest for one of the 22 player spots available on the roster.
As of right now, it looks like the team would assemble around July 20-22 and spend a week playing Japanese amateur teams in the Tokyo area.

Burrowing along: The Brock Badgers have a new website -- brockbadgersbaseball.com -- and it’s worth a peak.

The World comes to Thunder Bay: Before the world arrives in Thunder Bay for the World Junior championships July 23-Aug. 1 a pre-Worlds tournament will be held in Minneapolis July 12-20.
Besides Team Canada, Team USA and Chinese Taipei, the Minnetonka Millers, the Chaska Cubs, the Minneapolis U 20 and the St. Cloud and area Selects will play in the warm-up event to be staged at Minnetonka Veteran’s Field, Chaska Athletic Club, Midway Stadium and Faber Field. Officials are exploring moving a couple of the games to the Twins new home of Target Field.

The World also comes to Edmonton: The city of champions is basically the city of international baseball in Canada. And now Ron Hayter and his group will welcome another group in 2012 -- the Women’s Baseball World Cup.
Edmonton has hosted seven international events in all, including hosted the pre-Olympic qualifier in 1995, the inaugural Women’s World Cup in 2004, and the 2008 World Juniors Championship.
Thunder Bay chair Warren Philp is at TwinsFest this weekend spreading the word.
TwinsFest was a success, with lots of interest from Minnesota ball fans in the warm-up and the Worlds themselves getting pictures of Justin Morneau (New Westminster, BC), Jesse Crain (Toronto, Ont.), Rene Tosoni (Cotquilam, BC) and Corey Koskie (Anola, Man.) in Canada jerseys and hats along with Michael Cuddyer, Denard Span, Delmon Young and Joe Nathan in US gear.
