Blue Jays from Away

The Blue Jays’ minor league affiliates completed six games on Sunday and won them all for a perfect day with only the Bluefield Blue Jays behind in a suspended game.


Buffalo Bisons 5, Pawtucket Red Sox 2
The Buffalo won the first game of their double header against the Pawtucket Red Sox, getting a home run from Dalton Pompey and another solid outing from Casey Lawrence. Lawrence evened his record at 4-4 and now has a 3.94 ERA after throwing 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Danny Barnes finished the game and continued to be his dominant self, throwing 1 2/3 innings of no-hit ball, walking one and striking out three.

Pompey hit his third home run of the year, adding a walk but made an error in the field. Ryan Goins was 2/3 with a walk, an RBI and a run while Domonic Brown was also 2/3 with an RBI. Jesus Montero upped his batting average to .315 with a 1/2 game that included an RBI and a walk while Ezequiel Carrera was 1/3 with a triple and a walk as he continues his rehab from injury. Casey Kotchman was 1/2 with a walk and an RBI for the Bisons as well.

Buffalo Bisons 2, Pawtucket Red Sox 1
The Bisons squared their record at 61-61 on the season after beating the Pawtucket Red Sox for the second time on Sunday. Scott Copeland went six innings, giving up just a run on three hits and two walks with one strikeout and Dustin Antolin saved his 10th game of the year, giving up a hit and a walk with one strikeout.

Dalton Pompey was 1/3 with a run while Andy Burns was 0/1 with a run, a walk and two stolen bases. Jio Mier drove in a run with a double and Ryan Goins was 1/3 with an RBI.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 6, Trenton Thunder 4
The Fisher Cats’s double-play combination got to work on Sunday with the bats, contributing half of the club’s hit total on the way to a 6-4 win over the Trenton Thunder. Christian Lopes was 3/5 with three runs while Richard Urena was 3/5 with two doubles and an RBI. Jon Berti, playing left field, was 1/3 with two walks and Rowdy Tellez (1/3, BB, 2 RBI) and Emilio Guerrero (1/5, 2B, 2 RBI) each drove in two runs.

Alberta’s Shane Dawson made the start, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks with three strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings before making way for Wil Browning. Browning stranded both of the runners he inherited from Dawson and struck out five over two innings, giving up two hits. Colton Turner walked one in 1/3 of an inning and Chris Smith gave up a run on two hits and a walk in 1 1/3 innings but still notched the save

Dunedin Blue Jays 9, Clearwater Threshers 2
Dunedin was holding the fort in a close game with the Clearwater Threshers until the bottom of the seventh, in which the D-Jays sent nine men to the plate, scoring five times to put the game out of reach in a 9-2 victory. Ryan McBroom (3/4, BB, R, SB) and Jorge Flores (3/4, 2 RBI) led the way with three hits each but Anthony Alford (2/4, HR, BB, 2 RBI, R) and Matt Dean (2/4, BB, HR, RBI, 3 R) each hit a home run. Michael De La Cruz, coming into the game for Michael Reeves, was 1/2 with a double and two RBI.

Brad Allen was on the hill to start and went 4 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on eight hits and a walk with there strikeouts. Chris Rowley earned the win with 2 2/3 innings of one-hit ball, striking out three. Tim Mayza gave up a hit and struck out a batter over 1 1/3 innings while Dusty Isaacs allowed a hit in 1/3 of an inning, finishing the game.

Roster Note: David Harris was activated from his suspension and placed on the 7-day DL. Sean Reid-Foley also went on the DL, retroactive to August 12.


Lansing Lugnuts 4, West Michigan Whitecaps 2
The Lugnuts have been surging towards a playoff spot and got some help from their starter and their center fielder in a 4-2 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps. Jordan Romano went six innings, giving up just two hits and two walks with five strikeouts to get the win for the Lugnuts. Tom Robson pitched well for two innings, giving up two singles in the seventh (before getting a double play ball to end the inning) and allowing a runner on in the eighth on a fielding error sandwiched between a strikeout and two ground outs. In the ninth, however, Robson gave up two runs and he left the game with one out in the ninth, ultimately charged with two runs on four hits and a walk with one strikeout in 2 1/3 innings. Andrew Case stranded the runner he inherited from Robson and got the final two outs of the game to earn his sixth save.

Lane Thomas was 2/4 with a home run and two RBI, also scoring twice and stealing a base for a well-rounded day at the ballpark. Justin Atkinson also drove in a pair of runs and Ryan Metzler was 1/3 with a double and a walk.

Vancouver Canadians 6, Hillsboro Hops 5
Two runs in the top of the seventh made winners of the Vancouver Canadians, giving the club two wins in a row after besting the Hillsboro Hops 6-5. Luis Sanchez allowed two runs on five hits and five walks with three strikeouts over five innings and Evan Smith earned the win, despite blowing a save, giving up three runs on three hits with a strikeout in the sixth. Jackson McClelland got a hold, keeping the Hops at bay for two perfect innings and Griffin Glaude saved his fourth game of the year, giving up a hit in the ninth.

The Canadians spread their offense around the top of the order, getting two hits each from J.B. Woodman (2/3, 2 BB, 2B, RBI, 2 R, SB), Jacob Anderson (2/5, RBI) and Cavan Biggio (2/5, RBI). Christian Williams was also on base three times, going 1/2 with a double, two walks and two runs.
