The past week in college featured more intense games. From championships being raised to strong performances to individual honours being handed down this week had a little of everything. Check out the week that was below.

Wilson a Davenport legend

What a career Zac Wilson (New Lowell, Ont.) has had for the Davenport Panthers. Wilson was named Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year for his strong 2018. He hit .379 with a .444 on-base percentage. He ranked second in total bases with 120 and stolen bases with 21. He was third in hits with 69, fourth in home runs with 10 and doubles with 15. Wilson was also fifth in RBIs with 48, seventh in average. Wilson also pounded out 24 multi-hit games. He is also the all-time leader in school history with 214 hits, 150 runs scored and 51 stolen bases. He ranks second all-time at Davenport in games started at 165, RBIs with 118 and total bases at 118.

Mailloux named Pitcher of the Year

Olivier Mailloux (Ville de Quebec, Que.) was named Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year after going 11-3 with a 2.98 ERA over 17 starts. He tossed 90 2/3 innings, struck out 75 and held opponents to a .241 average. Mailloux was also named to the WHAC First team.

Brand-ed to First Team

Billy Brand (Burlington, Ont.) was named First Team All-Great Plains Athletic Conference after appearing in 47 games, 42 starts for Midland University. He hit .256 with a .324 on-base percentage and .376 slugging percentage. He swatted a pair of home runs and drove in 22 for the Warriors.

Canadians enter Cloud County Record books

Three Canadians have left their mark on the Cloud County T-Birds record books. Erik Sabrowski (Edmonton, Alta.) is seventh in single season home runs with 11, seventh in single season RBIs with 58 and ninth in single season runs with 53. He also leads the program in hit by pitches in a season with 24. On the mound owns the most strikeouts ever in a game with 18 and in a season with 117. His two shutouts this season is an all-time season and program high. 

Edmonton Cardinals grad Matt Bondarchuk (Edmonton, Alta.) became the Cloud County T-Birds' leader in games played (109) and hits (149).  

Matt Bondarchuk (Edmonton, Alta.) is the all-time leader in games played with 109, hits with 149 and singles at 124. He is also fourth all-time in sing season runs with 60 and 10th all-time in school history in single season hits with 63.

Tauren Langley (Edmonton, Alta.) holds the record for RBIs in a game with seven and hit by pitches with 26.


Deneau, Madonna off to NAIA Opening Round

Matt Deneau (Amherstburg, Ont.) had two hits in each of Madonna’s three games during their series with Indiana Institute of Technology. He hit a two-run home run in the opener, a 5-4 loss and drove in a run in each of Games 2 and 3. Madonna (36-17) has advanced to the NAIA Opening Round. Deneau was recently honoured by being named to the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference second team. He also received the Gold Glove for catchers in the WHAC, along with being named to the Academic All-District team.

Baker, Guntrip, Overacker, Wlad honoured

Both Brenden Baker (Red Deer, Alta.) and Riley Guntrip (Camrose, Alta.) picked up conference accolades. Baker was named to the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference second team. He hit .357 with a .413 on-base percentage and a .469 slugging percentage. Baker hit two home runs and drove in 36 for the Saints. Along with getting it done on the field he also got it done in the classroom and was named to the All-Academic team.

Biology major Riley Guntrip (Camrose, Alta.) of Siena Heights University has made his way onto the Google Cloud College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District team and WHAC All-Academic Team. He posted a 3.83 GPA to go along with his .324 batting average and 24 RBIs.

Okotoks Dawgs grad Ryley Overacker-(Calgary, Alta.) earned a berth on the Wolverine-Hoosier Conference All-Academic Team.

Ryley Overacker (Calgary, Alta.) and Carson Wlad (Calgary, Alta.) were named to the All-Academic Team, as well. Overacker hit .228, while Wlad hit .266.

Howie picks up academic honour

Nick Howie (Oakville, Ont.) was one of two Eastern Kentucky players to land on the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District team selected by CoSIDA. Howie, a finance major, posted a 4.0 GPA and is hitting .313 with eight home runs and 41 RBIs so far in 2018.

Sasaki excels in the classroom

Shoma Sasaki (Delta, BC) was named to the All-Academic Team for the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.

Mules throw combined no-no, go on to win title

Brandon Reid (Toronto, Ont.) threw 6 1/3 scoreless, no-hit inning for the Central Missouri Mules as they dropped Central Oklahoma 15-0 in Game 3 if the Mid America Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships to advance to the final. The Mules went on to defeat Emporia State on a walk-off win to capture the MIAA championship.

Prospects Academy's Jackson Wark (St. Albert, Alta.) had a solid outing and a win for the St. Louis Billikens

Jackson Wark (St. Albert, Alta.) gave up two runs -- one earned -- on five hits over 6 1/3 innings for the St. Louis Billikens to beat St. Bonaventure 8-4. He walked two and struck out seven to improve to 9-2 on the year.


Allemann wins and records save, Soper with the offensive support

The University of British Columbia Thunderbirds needed Braeden Allemann (Surrey, BC) twice during the California Pacific Conference Championships. Allemann picked up the win going seven innings and allowing two runs -- one earned -- in a 5-3 Game 3 win over Corban. He allowed seven hits, two walks and struck out 10. He was summoned from the bullpen in Game 4 against Benedictine-Mesa. He threw a scoreless 1/3 of an inning to pick up the save.

Lucas Soper (Vancouver, BC) was a busy man during the Thunderbirds postseason play last week. After recording a hit and driving in a run in the 7-3 loss to Benedictine-Mesa, he walked twice and was hit by a pitch in a 9-7 win over Marymount California. He went 3-for-4 in a 5-3 win over Corban and then collected three more hits in an 8-6 win over Benedictine-Mesa. One of the hits was a solo home run in the 8-6 win. The Thunderbirds are moving on to the National Intercollegiate Athletic Association opening round against Judson. 

Vauxhall Academy Jets Brady Moxham (Oakville, Man) allowed one unearned run for South Dakota State in a 6 2/3 innings outing.

It was a tough one for the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State University as they dropped a 4-3 decision in 14 innings in Game 1 of their series with Western Illinois. Brady Moxham (Oakville, Man.) lasted 6 2/3 innings and gave up just an unearned run. He scattered four hits and three walks, while striking out nine.

 

Diaz improves to 10-0, Reivers win Region XI

Iowa Western’s Indigo Diaz (Vancouver, BC) allowed one run over five innings to beat Marshalltown 13-1 in Game 2 of the Region XI tournament. He surrendered three hits and struck out seven. The Reivers won all three games to win Region XI and capped a 27-0 record in region play. They currently are 50-5 and on a 32 game winning streak heading into the Northern District Tournament. Diaz is 10-0 with a 1.66 ERA over 54 1/3 innings in 2018.


Griffs lose on walk-off

The Canisius Golden Griffins gave up a run in the bottom of the ninth and dropped Game 1 of their series 2-1 to Manhattan. J.P. Stevenson (New Glasgow, PEI) threw seven innings, giving up four hits and one run. He walked one and struck out seven Jasper hitters.

O’Rourke beats No. 8 Northern State

Game 4 of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament for Minot State was in the hands of Reilly O’Rourke (Sydney, NS). He delivered five scoreless innings for the win, giving up five hits and a walk. He struck out four in the 4-1 win over No. 8 Northern State.

 

Ontario Thunderbirds' grad Reilly Rutgers (Hamilton, Ont.) gained a tourney win for the Garrett Lakers. 

Rutgers relied on twice

Reilly Rutgers (Hamilton, Ont.) picked up the win for Garrett College in a Region XX DII tournament play-in game. He worked six innings, allowing six hits, two runs -- one earned -- and walked four to beat Cecil College 12-2. He was later called upon in Game 2 of the Region XX DII tournament against CCBC Essex, a game Garrett dropped 4-3. Rutgers went 4 2/3 innings, allowed seven hits, three runs (two earned) and struck out four. Garrett dropped the next game and were eliminated. He finished the year 3-6 with a 3.83 ERA over 47 innings pitched. He appeared in 13 games, making eight starts.


Stubbins stops Shoreline, bats support

Kyle Stubbins (Surrey, BC) allowed one run over six innings as Douglas College beat Shoreline 3-1. Stubbins scattered five hits and three walks, striking out three for the win.

Lenn Nakatsuka (Victoria, BC) and Matthew Reyes (Vancouver, BC) supplied plenty of offence for the Royals. Nakatsuka went 4-for-6 with two doubles and a stolen base in a 14-9 loss to Edmonds. He finished with six hits and a walk over three games played. Reyes also terrorized Edmonds pitching in the 14-9 loss going 3-for-4 with a walk, three RBIs and a stolen base. He finished the week with two more hits, a walk and two more RBIs.

Bourassa, Dons pick up Game 3 win

The University of San Francisco Dons dropped the first two games of their series with Brigham Young University. Trying to salvage a win in Game 3 they handed the ball to Landen Bourassa (Lethbridge, Alta.) who delivered 8 1/3 innings and gave up just two runs in a 6-2 win. He worked around eight hits and struck out five.

ABC grad Archer Brookman (Pointe-Claire, Que.) had four hits for the Seminole State Trojans. 

Brookman, Lebreux send Seminole State to wins

The offensive load for Seminole State (OK) was largely carried by Archer Brookman (Pointe-Claire, Que.) and Marc Lebreux (Sainte-Anne, Que.) last week. Brookman had five hits, four walks and drove in two. Lebreux had seven hits, including three, two-hit games to close the week. He also hit a home run in a 17-15 win over Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. Seminole State (OK) took down Connors State and Eastern Oklahoma State in the Region II tournament.


Cuyahoga set for Kellogg

Lucas DiLuca (Windsor, Ont.) went 3-for-5 with a stolen base in Cuyahoga’s 12-0 beating of Vicennes. He had another two hits in another shut out win, 5-0, over Lakeland in the NJCAA Region XII sub-regional final. Cuyahoga is now takes on Kellogg in their next game.

Dickerson does well for Youngstown State

Drew Dickerson (Port Hope, Ont.) had himself a strong showing for Youngstown State. He got things rolling with a 2-for-6 game with a RBI in a 17-16 win over Toledo. Ohio was next on the slate and Dickerson went 2-for-4 with a walk, a RBI and a stolen base. Northern Kentucky snuck out a 16-13 Game 1 win but Dickerson stayed hot going 3-for-5 with three RBIs. In Game 3 of the series he had a hit and a walk in a 10-3 win.

Bedard, Gauthier, Langlois shine for Trojans

Trinidad State swept all three games they played in the Region IX behind strong games at the dish from Alex Bedard (Levis, Que.) and Xavier Langlois (Varennes, Que.) along with a strong start from David Gauthier (Mont-Sainte-Hilaire, Que.). Bedard had a hit and two RBIs in a 15-5 Game 1 win over Miles. He followed it up with two hits and two stolen bases as the Trojans dumped Northeastern Junior College 9-3. Against Lamar, a 9-5 win, he went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two stolen bases. Bedard did all his damage out of the leadoff spot.

Ducs de Longueui's Xavier Langlois (Varennes, Que.) had a six-hit week with two RBIs.

Langlois went 2-for-3 with a RBI against Miles, scored a pair of runs against Northeastern and went 4-for-5 with two RBIs versus Lamar.

Gauthier maintained his perfect record by tossing 6 2/3 innings in a 9-5 win over Lamar. He worked around eight hits and four walks, allowing five runs (one earned) to move to 9-0. He struck out a pair in the victory.

Pompey playing well, Wildcats win series over MSU

Tristan Pompey (Toronto, Ont.) has been the straw that stirs the drink atop the No. 17 Kentucky lineup. In a midweek clash with No. 19 Indiana he hit a solo home run and finished with two hits in a 7-6 win. The Wildcats then took down Mississippi State, winning 2-of-3 in their Southeastern Conference series. In Game 1, a 9-6 win, Pompey went 2-for-2 with two doubles, three walks and four RBIs. The Wildcats took Game 2, 4-1 behind a 2-for-4 game with another double from Pompey. He had a hit and was hit by a pitch in a Game 3 loss. The series marked the final regular season games to be played at Cliff Hagan Stadium. The Wildcats take on Murray State before heading to Vanderbilt for a three-game set to close out the regular season. Pompey is hitting .335 as he tries to continue to raise his draft stock heading into the June draft.

MacDonald ready to go for Red Wolves

The Red Wolves of Arkansas State lost 3-of-4 but Kyle MacDonald (Mississauga, Ont.) showed well. He went 3-for-3 with a two-run home run in a 14-3 loss to Central Arkansas. The Red Wolves won Game 1 of their series with Georgia Southern 6-5. The Crowder Community College grad had a hit, three walks and a RBI in the win. He was then hit by a pitch and scored a run in a Game 2 loss. He closed his week in a 4-1 loss by chipping in a hit and working a walk. The Red Wolves wrap up the regular season with a midweek tilt with Ole Miss and a weekend series with Arkansas Little-Rock. They own a 19-29 record, 9-18 in Sunbelt Conference play.

North Shore Twins grad Taylor Wright (Vancouver BC) had a four-hit week for the Maryland Terrapins.

Taylor Wright (Vancouver BC) earned a walk as a pinch hitter during Maryland’s 8-7, 10 inning win over Towson. Wright stroked a hit and drove in a run in a Game 1 win over Rutgers. In Game 2 he went 2-for-4 before closing out his week going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. The Terrapins swept the three-game series. They are now down to their final three regular season games against Indiana.

Lloyd lights offensive fire, saves two

Matt Lloyd (Okotoks, Alta.) was a key cog for the No. 19 Indiana Hoosiers last week. He started things off with a hit and two walks in a 7-6 loss to in-state rival No.17 Kentucky. The Hoosiers dropped a second game on the week in Game 1 versus Nebraska. Lloyd had two hits and a walk in the 5-2 loss. In a 6-3 Game 2 win he went 3-for-5, while also closing things out on the mound for his fourth save. He worked a scoreless inning with a strikeout. The Hoosiers took Game 3 and the series with an 8-6 win. Lloyd was again in the middle of the action pounding out two hits and a RBI. He collected his fifth save going an inning, allowing two hits, a run and a walk. Indiana has a three-game set with Maryland before opening Big 10 Tournament play.

Six hits for Moffat

Leadoff man Mike Moffat (Waterdown, Ont.) had back-to-back three hit games for Northern Kentucky in their series with Youngstown State. Moffat went 3-for-4 with a triple, a walk and a RBI in a 16-13 Game 1 win. In a 14-7 Game 2 loss he again went 3-for-4, this time with two doubles and a walk. The Norse dropped Game 3 and the series.

Windsor Selects grad Jake Rajsigl (Windsor, Ont.) pitched five innings in a Lackawanna Falcons' win. 

Rajsigl stops Sussex County

Lackawanna scored 14 runs and Jake Rajsigl (Windsor, Ont.) threw all five innings in a 14-1 win over Sussex County. Rajsigl allowed five hits and struck out three to improve his record to 7-1.

Pair comes on strong for Crowder

Two BC boys, Kobe Morris (Victoria, BC) and Tyler Duncan (Sooke, BC), were ready to go for Crowder College last week. Morris started his week going 2-for-5 with two RBIs in a 7-6 loss to State Fair Community College. Pounded out three hits, including a home run and four RBIs as Crowder then downed Mineral Area. State Fair again fell victim to his hot bat as Morris homered again on the way to three hits and a pair of RBIs.

Duncan started off by walking in the 7-6 loss to State Fair before going 4-for-5 with a double and a pair of home runs in the 10-1 thumping of Mineral Area. He finished that game with six RBIs. Duncan chipped in a hit, two walks and a RBI in the 15-7 win over State Fair. In Region XVI Championship play against Jefferson he had a hit and a RBI in a 7-4 loss.

 

Humeniuk, Indian Hills compete in Region XI Tournament

Indian Hills Community College lost their first game of the Region XI Tournament to Marshalltown 10-5. Ryan Humeniuk (Stonewall, Man.) went 3-for-5 with a RBI in the loss. Indian Hills bounced back with a 15-2 win over Southwestern that included a hit and two RBIs from Humeniuk. Next was a rematch with Marshalltown and this time it went in Indian Hills favour by a 9-4 score. Humeniuk went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the win. Iowa Western proved to be too much in Game 4, dumping Indian Hills 6-1 in the next game. Humeniuk had a hit and drove in the lone run in the final loss.

Langley Blaze Michael Stovman (Maple Ridge, BC) was double duty for the Indian River State Pioneers going 4-0 on the mound and driving in 17 runs.

Michael Stovman (Maple Ridge, BC) completed his first season at Indiana River State with a .229 average, three home runs and 17 RBIs in the box over 36 games played. He also went 4-0 with a 2.55 ERA and averaged 10.22 strikeouts per nine innings.

Despite teams being eliminated there is still plenty to look forward to as the college baseball season moves along. This week featured many Canadians making headlines. To find out what next week brings make sure to check the BMOC column.
