Canada Games Day 2: Ontario unbeaten in B pool

The Canada Games baseball competition kicked into high gear on Sunday with eight games including all six teams in Pool B playing twice. Host Manitoba and Ontario both recorded two victories to improve their records to 3-0 and a tie for first place. In Pool A, Saskatchewan and Alberta both sit at 2-1 while BC and Québec at 1-2.

Please see below for information from Day 2 of the Canada Games Baseball Competition in Winnipeg, Manitoba:

Ontario 1 Nova Scotia 0 - Ontario took advantage of two Nova Scotia errors and broke a scoreless tie with a run in the sixth to come away with a 1-0 win. Andrew Giorno tossed five innings of shutout baseball and struck out three before Sebastien Santos came on for the final two innings to record the save.

PEI 9 New Brunswick 2 - PEI's Ben MacDougall drove in a pair of runs and picked up the win on the mound to lead his side to a 9-2 win over New Brunswick. PEI struck for six runs in the fourth highlighted by a Patrick Young two-run double.

Manitoba 5 Newfoundland & Labrador 2 - Zach Giesbrecht struck out seven over four scoreless innings to record the win and drove in two runs to lead Manitoba to a 5-2 win over Newfoundland & Labrador. Noah Geekie's two out single in the third scored the eventual game winning run before Manitoba added insurance runs in the fourth and sixth. Josh Mercer collected two hits and drove in a run in a losing cause for Newfoundland & Labrador.

Alberta 6 Québec 4 - A three-run first inning highlighted by a Matthew Coutney two-run triple paved the way for Alberta who hung on to defeat Québec, 6-4. Alberta built a 6-0 lead after three and received a save from Liam Froment who allowed just one hit in 1 1/3 innings. Québec's Jason Begin went 3-for-4 with an RBI in the loss.

Nova Scotia 4 PEI 1 - Garret Peterson fashioned a complete-game three hitter allowing just one run and struck out four to help Nova Scotia to a 4-1 win over PEI. Dyton Blackett led off the fourth with a triple and scored on Evan O'Toole's ground out which went for the eventual game-winning run. Noah Duckworth tripled and scored PEI's lone run in the sixth.

Saskatchewan 3 BC 2 - BC broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the sixth only to see Saskatchewan comeback with three in the bottom of the inning and eventually hold on for a 3-2 win. BC's Travis McDougall and Saskatchewan's Tyler McWillie went toe-to-toe for five shutout innings before each surrendered runs in the sixth. Jayden Knight put BC up by two with a two-run single before Saskatchewan answered back with three in the bottom including the tying and winning run scoring on a McDougall error. Ryan Olchoway earned the win with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Manitoba 5 New Brunswick 0 - Jordan Lussier tossed a one-hitter facing just 22 batters to lead unbeaten Manitoba to a 5-0 win over New Brunswick. Lussier allowed a one-out single in the second before getting a double play and walked a batter in the sixth in an otherwise flawless performance. Carrying a 1-0 lead into the third, Manitoba struck for four runs including a two-run double off the bat of Noah Geekie.

Ontario 5 Newfoundland & Labrador 1 - Shane Laforest fired five hitless innings and struck out seven while Justin Rogers allowed just one hit over two scoreless frames as Ontario got by Newfoundland & Labrador, 5-1. Dylan Whittaker and Noah Richardson recorded RBI singles to put Ontario out to a 2-0 lead in the first before they added three runs in the sixth. Newfoundland & Labrador starter Evan Reid recorded five strikeouts while taking the loss.
