Things have to click just right for a starter to win twice in one week.

Firstly he has to pitch well in back to back outings.

And secondly, the two outings have to fall inside the seven-day time frame.

RHP Cal Quantrill did just that for the triple-A El Paso

Chihuahuas.

Former Ontario Terrier Quantrill (Port Hope, Ont.) pitched 5 2/3 innings as El Paso beat the Tacoma Rainers 6-2 before 2,177 fans at Cheney Stadium.

And five days later facing the same Tacoma team worked 5 2/3 innings 13-5 before 6,184 at Southwest University Park.

The two outings earned him Canadian Baseball Player minor league player of the week for Week II.

As the late, great Mike Flanagan used to say when starting a second time in a week against a team that you have already beaten: “What do you do? Throw the same stuff knowing that they know how you got them out. Or pitch in a different manner wondering what kind of success you will have?”

In Tacoma, Quantrill allowed two runs on three hits and two walks. He struck out five in his 93-pitch outing (55 strikes) recording seven ground ball outs and five in the air.

At home, Quantrill allowed two runs on five hits and two walks. He struck out seven in his 92 pitch outing (60 strikes), recording five ground ball outs and three fly ball outs.
