There are broken bats that end their swinging days as a hero.
And then, there is Troy Daring’s busted piece of lumber.
It went out like the one Luis Gonzalez used to help the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the New York Yankees in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series.
Tied in bottom of the seventh, Jade Salmon-Williams singled with one out and advanced on a wild pitch and a grounder. After an intentional walk, Daring hit a broken-bat, single over short giving the Brampton Royals a walk-off 2-1 win over the Mississauga North Tigers.
Brampton advances to the Baseball Canada nationals at Vaughan Aug. 23-26.
The London Badgers knocked off Newmarket 8-3 to win midget honours, the Windsor Selects edged Tecumseh 9-7 capturing the junior eliminations and the Windsor Stars beat Strathroy 5-4 in senior.
Bantam: Nathan Arruda started the final working five innings before Cole White took pitching two innings and striking out three for the win for coach Kyle MacKinnon. Josh Naylor took the loss as Brampton had two hits each from Darren Shred and Salmon-Williams.
Shred picked up the win, had two hits and two RBIs in the opener, a 17-1 romp over the Mississauga North Bengals. Conner Morro knocked in three runs.
Josh Marson pitched a complete-game 5-2 win over West Toronto as Shred had a pair of hits.
Despite allowing only two runs and striking out eight Arruda and the Royals fell 3-1 to the Mississauga North Tigers.
Shred then had two hits and knocked in three in an 8-3 win against the Scarborough Stingers with Nickolon Dudhnath gaining the win, as he allowed three earned runs and striking out four. Randall Winger singled and added two steals.
Arruda homered and Daring knocked in two runs as Shred pitched a complete game, fanning 12 in a 3-1 triumph over the Markham Mariners. Daring had a hit and knocked in a run.
Austin Ferguson had two hits, including a triple and an RBI in a 15-3 romp over the North York Blues. Salmon-Willians knocked in two runs and stoile two bases, while Shred tripled home a run. Marson pitched a complete game fanning four.
That set the stage for the finale.
Junior: Larry Balkwill, Spencer Church and Ross Barker all homered, Barker going 3-for-4 with two RBIs in Windsor’s final win. Kameron Bagley gained up the win, Connor Soulliere the save. Both the Selects and Tecumseh advance to the juniors which begin Wednesday in Trois-Rivières, Que.
Balkwill hit a grand slam as Joel Cooper was 3-for-5 in support of starter Chris Renaud in a 14-10 win over North York in the opener. Patrick Firth hit a grand slam and Jerome Talosis a three run blast for North York.
Brett Siddall hit a three-run, walk-off homer as Windsor edged Pickering 10-9. Balkwill and Church hit solo home runs for winning pitcher Connor Soulliere.
Ryan Soulliere pitched Windsor to a 3-2 win over Tecumseh as Laszlo Horvath hit a two-run single to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh and Joel Cooper a walk off single for the win in extras.
Down 10-1 in the fifth, Windsor rallied for a 12-11 win over Whitby, thanks to six runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and two in the bottom of the seventh for walk of win as Siddall hit a scoring fly ball bringing home Robson for the winning run. Horvath hit a three run homer.
Windsor scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to break a 4-4 tie against Hamilton on Steven Adam’s double making Windsor a 6-4 winner over Hamilton. Siddall gained the win with four scoreless innings.
Barker was 3-for-4 with two RBIs to make a winner out of Connor Soulliere, who pitched a complete-game six-hitter in a 6-3 win against Whitby.
Tecumseh’s Ben Stanzcak pitched the win and Casey Power homered in a 7-1 win over Windsor to set up the finale.
Midget: Trailing by a run in the seventh London rallied to beat Newmarket 8-3 in the title game in Sarnia. The Badgers are in Quebec City for the championships which begin Wednesday, London’s fourth straight trip to the national.
Nolan Anderson came on in relief of starter Dan Parsons in the final.
London beat the Tecumseh Thunder 18s 4-1 in the semi-final. London also beat Tecumseh 18s 12-1, the Tecumseh 16s 16-8, Hamilton 13-2 and Brampton 19-1.
Senior: Both the Windsor Stars and Strathroy will advance to the nationals Aug. 23-27 in Prince George, B.C.
