Baseball Canada Cup: Teams compete for a spot in the medal round

Ottawa, ON – Six games took place on Saturday with the last five round-robin games and a lone quarterfinal match-up. Teams battled it out to guarantee themselves a spot in the medal round on Sunday. Newfoundland and Labrador, British Columbia, Québec and Saskatchewan have all moved on to the semi-finals scheduled for Sunday.

Manitoba 12 PEI 0

Owen Harms (Winnipeg, MB) was dominant on the mound in an impressive 1-hit performance. Harms tossed five shutout innings striking out three and not walking a single batter. Logan MacDougall (Summerside, PE) picked up the lone hit for PEI while starter Brandon Condon (Kensington, PE) was charged with the loss. Trey Fortin (Winnipeg, MB) and Tristan Peters (Winkler, MB) both went 2-for-3 with three RBIs each.

Saskatchewan 6 Ontario 2

Saskatchewan’s four-run inning in the bottom of the third proved to be the difference maker in this one. Danny Berg (Saskatoon, SK) singled in a pair to lead the charge as Jaden Hoffmann (Unity, SK) earned the win after holding Ontario to two runs on three hits over 4.1 innings. Ontario’s starting pitcher Lucas Wepf (Georgetown, ON) was charged with the loss after striking out one and allowing five hits over 3.1 innings.

British Columbia 5 Alberta 4

The hometown favourite Alberta’s dramatic comeback fell short despite putting up four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Cole Jackson (Thorsby, AB) doubled and drove in three runs in the losing effort. Jayden Knight’s (Langley, BC) three-run home run in the top of the seventh proved to be the difference. Starting pitcher Jacob Cross (Abbotsford, BC) was dominant on the mound shutting out the opposition over five innings and allowing only one hit to earn the win.

Québec 10 Nova Scotia 0

William Sierra (Montreal, QC) put on an impressive performance striking out eight over five shutout innings and giving up only one hit as he picked up the win. Marc-Antoine Lebreux (St-Jerome, QC) led the offense going 3-for-4 with a double and driving in two runs. Nathan Livingston (Glace Bay, NS) picked up Nova Scotia’s lone hit in the ball game with a double in the fourth while starter Jaden Griffin (Lower Sackville, NS) was charged with the loss allowing eight runs on eight hits over four innings.

Newfoundland and Labrador 7 New Brunswick 1

Matthew Janes (Mount Pearl, NL) held the opposition to one hit in the outing to lead New Brunswick to victory. Janes struck out three and walked six over 6.1 innings. New Brunswick’s starter Greg Mitchell (Calais, US) was charged with the loss after allowing four runs on six hits over 2.1 innings. Daniel Hogarth (Conception Bay South, NL) led the charge on offense going 2-for-4 with a double and a triple while driving in two runs. John Cribb (St. John’s) contributed as well going 3-for-4 and coming across to score twice.

Québec 12 Ontario 2

Québec punched its ticket to the semifinals after putting up 10 runs over the last two innings. Marc-Antoine Lefebvre (Varennes, QC) went 2-for-4 with a triple and drove in four runs to lead the offense. Reliever Conor Angel (Lachine, QC) tossed three perfect innings and struck out four batters to earn the win for Québec. Justin Doran (Chatham, ON) went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs in the losing effort.
