Caden, age 11, with grandfather Ron, left and his father,Mark, president of the Blue Jays.

Good genes: “My family has a shared passion and connection towards baseball but in all different capacities. My grandfather, Ron Shapiro, was one of the first ‘super agents.’ He represented legends such as (Hall of Famers) Brooks Robinson, Cal Ripken Jr., Kirby Puckett and Jim Palmer. My father, Mark Shapiro, started his journey with an entry-level job for the Cleveland Indians and worked his way up to GM and eventually President before taking over for Paul Beeston with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2016. Now, I get to continue their relationships with the game in a different way. Being as close to the field as possible.” (His father, Mark, played football for Princeton and uncle, Herb, played lacrosse at Brown.)

The most influential person in my baseball life: “My father (Mark) is the most important figure in my career and my life. Words cannot really express what he has done for me and the example he has set for me on the field and off of it.”

The most influential person in my baseball career, besides my father: “My head coach at Princeton, Scott Bradley, provided me with the opportunity to attend one of the finest institutions in the world and empowered me as a player and leader. He believed in me and always had my back.”

Best moment on the ball field to date: “I have had so many moments in my career that I hold close to my heart. But without a doubt, the best moment of my career came after one of the toughest moments. This last spring our Princeton team missed our Ivy league playoffs by one game. The loss was heartbreaking. But after the game when our team got back no one wanted to leave the locker room. We pulled up chairs and told stories for hours. To me, it was a testament to the culture and relationships my class of seniors built at Princeton. Deep into the night, we sat, talked, reflected, and laughed. I love those boys.”

My favourite player as a youngster: “Victor Martinez.”

My favourite now: “Still Victor Martinez or Michael Brantley.”
