Good genes: “My mother, Tara Beck, played softball and was a pitcher and first baseman. She pitched for the South East Steelers and went to Western championships twice. Mom was also a competitive curler throughout high school and her young adult years. And she figured skated and played volleyball in high school. My father, Blair Beck, played Hockey and Baseball for a long time. He played senior ball starting with the Lang Angels and then the Carnduff Astros and finished his playing career at Old Timers Nationals, playing three years. He played hockey with the Milestone Flyers and then the Carnduff Red Devils.”

The most influential people in my baseball life: “My Grandpa Beck and my father. Grandpa Ray Beck, who is inducted into the Saskatchewan baseball hall of fame. He used to hit thousands of pop flies with a tennis racket when I was little. My Dad was also a huge influence as I was always at the field watching him play growing up. I would always go to chase down foul balls and make enough money to buy a couple of freezies.”

The most influential person in my baseball career, besides my family: “Chris Untereiner was also a major influence as he was the first coach that I worked with the showed me the possibility of what you can do with baseball and where it can take you.”

Best day on the ball field: “The bronze medal game at 2022 Canada Summer Games against Team BC. I think we won that game 6-5. I had the winning run and my buddy Callum Hollinger, also from Carnduff, hit me in for the winning RBI. Then, when we flipped the inning over to the bottom of the inning and made one of the biggest jumping catches of my life to save the guy who was on second base from scoring.”

Favourite player when you discovered baseball: “Growing up it was prime Josh Donaldson with the Blue Jays.”

Favourite player today: “Now it is Dalton Varsho because he is a similar player to me, and he is what I strive to be. An elite defending outfielder with speed and a good bat.”

Interested teams: “I cannot really give the teams that are currently interested, but there is lots of interest.”

Baseball America

Carter Beck, OF, Indiana State

“Beck feels like the least likely player of this group to warrant a first-round case, but the more you dig into the profile, the easier it is to like him. And nearly every scout you talk to about Beck will mention that model teams adore him, which could drive his draft position up even further—especially for any club that is both model-driven and lacking a second-round pick.

Beck is a 5-foot-11, 205-pound center fielder and left-handed hitter in the midst of his second straight impressive season with Indiana State. He’s hitting .348/.434/.636 with 11 home runs, 16 doubles and nine stolen bases. He’s an aggressive hitter who has never walked much because he likes to swing the bat, but he’s always kept his strikeouts in check and made a lot of contact. His underlying batted-ball data is also among the very best in the country, with loud exit velocity numbers and tremendous in-zone contact. It’s not the same high-end power that a Logan Hughes or Chase Brunson have at their disposal, but it’s also solidly more than a lighter-bat like Jarren Advincula’s. He also has a few summers of solid wood bat track record in the Western Canadian League.

Beck also might have the best defensive profile of any of the college hitters mentioned here, as he’s a plus runner and terrific athlete who should get every opportunity to stick in center and improve there. His defense does need refinement, but he’s also not spent a ton of time at the position historically as he was a multi-sport athlete in high school who also played hockey and spent time at both shortstop and catcher.

The biggest knock on Beck is that his production and data has come against Missouri Valley Conference competition, which will certainly add some skepticism.”

“Carter Beck is one the fastest rising bats in the college class.

Makes a ton of contract in zone with plus raw power. A chance to stay in centre field at the next level. He feels like he is trending towards a top-three round pick. Up to No. 64 on our draft board.”
