TORONTO — Jack Perry's dominant performance helped Team Grey shut out Team Black 6-0 in the seventh game of the 2025 Canadian Futures Showcase at Rogers Centre, on Wednesday.
The 18-year-old right-handed pitcher from Mississauga, Ont. put together a spectacular day on the mound, giving up no runs on just two hits and one walk, while notching four strikeouts in three innings.
"Honestly, it's surreal," Perry said post-game. "It's definitely something that in the moment was hard to take in, but in the end, once you take a deep breath and you recognize I belong here, I feel good, I can play here, it makes it a lot easier."
Perry made the most of his only outing of the tournament, as his great start earned him player of the game honours.
"Honestly, it's awesome to win player of the game," said the right-hander. "But it's so much more that I'm being recognized for doing my job as well as I can."
Right-hander Caleb Dupuis (Georgetown, Ont.) continued the stellar pitching for Team Grey, giving up zero runs, no hits, and no walks with one strikeout in two relief innings.
Dylan De Meyer (Abbotsford, B.C.) closed out the final two frames for Team Grey, also not allowing a hit, and struck out three with one walk.
Right-fielder Daril Rodriguez (Red Deer, Alta.) was the biggest offensive star of the game. In the top of the sixth, the 17-year-old smacked a double that scored Jamie Moore (Komoka, Ont.) and Drazic Charbonneau (Montreal, Que.) for two RBIs. Rodriguez finished his day 1-for-2.
Left-fielder Aidan Vivaldi (Oakville, Ont.) had the other RBI for Team Grey, as he was walked with the bases loaded in the seventh inning, which cashed in centre-fielder Carter Bestebroer (Chilliwack, B.C.), who also reached base on a walk earlier in the inning.
The other three runs for Team Grey came from capitalizing on fielding errors by Team Black. In the third, shortstop Joey Khananisho (Kleinburg, Ont.), and Bestebroer, scored on throwing errors, while Vivaldi crossed the plate from first base in the sixth after a mishandled single that was hit by Moore.
First baseman Christian Iriotakis (Toronto, Ont.) and designated hitter Luke Laird (Langley, B.C.) recorded the only two hits for Team Black in the game, finishing 1-for-3 and 1-for-1, respectively.
Mathis McKenna (Rigaud Que.) started the game for Team Black and went three innings, giving up two runs on three hits, with no walks and three strikeouts.
Hayden Robbins (Comox, B.C.) then threw two no-hit innings before Ryler Straarup (Medicine Hat, Alta.) finished the contest, allowing four runs on two hits and five walks.
