TORONTO -- William Henderson (Mississauga, Ont.) hit a wild inside-the-park home run to help Team Royal cruise to a 9-1 victory over Team Navy at the Canadian Futures Showcase at Rogers Centre on Tuesday.
In the sixth inning, the 17-year-old from Mississauga hit a ball to centre field that dropped amid Team Navy's outfield confusion, scoring Xavier-Raphaël Brault (Blainville, Que.) and Ramsey Chung (Mississauga, Ont.) before racing around the bases to accomplish the rare feat.
“Well, I kind of saw it in the gap, the centre fielder wasn't really getting there, so I just started running hard,” Henderson said after the game. “Then I saw him dive, and I was like, 'yeah, I'm scoring.'”
Henderson, who has yet to announce a college commitment, notched another hit earlier in the game and scored on a Finn Hoeschen (North Vancouver, B.C) RBI. He finished the day going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs, earning the player of the game award.
“First at-bat, I was looking for a fastball, got it, turned on it [on the] first pitch. Second at-bat, I was a little bit out front, but somehow placed it in the right centre gap,” said Henderson. "[I'm] seeing the ball.”
Chung also had a big day for Team Royal, going 1-for-2 with a walk and crossing the plate twice in the victory.
First baseman Jalen Jacob (Maple, Ont.), catcher Gabriel Larocque (Azilda, Ont.), designated hitter Jayden Kane (Fort McMurray, Alta.), extra hitter Kason Siguenza (Abbotsford, B.C.) and right fielder Brault also all recorded hits for Team Royal in the win.
Extra hitter Theo Lima (Whitby, Ont.) notched the only run for Team Navy on an RBI single in the fifth inning that scored Gabe Fink (Edmonton, Alta.) after he reached base on a walk earlier in the inning.
Team Royal starting pitcher Damarcus Rideout-Carter (Brampton, Ont.) threw a flawless three innings of no-hit baseball, giving up no runs while striking out three after walking the first two batters he faced.
Alex Jackson (Cambridge, Ont.) and Gavin Campbell (Belle River, Ont.) each pitched two innings in relief to close out the victory.
Calum Anderson (Calgary, Alta.) started on the mound for Team Navy and threw 62 pitches in three innings, giving up two runs on three hits, two walks and two hit batters while recording three punchouts.
Finn McLean (Ottawa, Ont.) threw two innings and gave up one run before Nicolas Siegenthaler (Vancouver, B.C.) allowed six runs on four hits in the final two frames.
