The Athletics are set to call up Canadian outfielder Denzel Clarke, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.

Mired in a nine-game losing streak, the A’s will look to Clarke (Pickering, Ont.) to help bolster their lineup offensively and defensively

In 31 games for the triple-A Las Vegas Aviators this season, Clarke is batting .286 and owns a .436 on-base percentage. The 25-year-old Canuck has eight doubles, three triples and seven stolen bases.

Selected by the A’s in the fourth round of the 2021 MLB draft, the Toronto Mets and Junior National grad is in his fifth pro season.

In 2024, Clarke batted .269 with 13 home runs, eight triples and 36 stolen bases in 116 games with the A’s double-A Midland RockHounds. He followed up his strong regular season by hitting .382 with two home runs, 13 RBIs and nine stolen bases in 19 games with the Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League (AFL). For his efforts, he was named to the AFL All-Star Team.

The A’s added Clarke to their 40-man roster in November.

After honing his skills with the Cal State Northridge Matadors, Clarke played seven games for the A’s Arizona Complex League club in 2021 before recording a .365 on-base percentage (OBP) and clubbing 15 home runs and swiping 30 stolen bases in 93 games between class-A Stockton and Lansing in 2022.

During that season, the 6-foot-4, 220-pound outfielder also became the first player in pro baseball history to hit inside-the-park homers in back-to-back games when he did so for Lansing on August 2 and August 3.

Clarke has experience at all three outfield positions but has been used mostly as a centre fielder.

In 2023, he played three games for Canada at the World Baseball Classic, going 0-for-8 with a walk, hit by pitch and a stolen base.

Clarke is set to become the second former Toronto Mets player to make their major league debut this season, joining catcher Liam Hicks (Toronto, Ont.) who is batting .277 with four home runs and 21 RBIs in 29 games for the Miami Marlins.
