COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan used a 16-run fourth inning to defeat Ohio State 23-1 on Saturday morning at a rainy Bill Davis Stadium in Game 1 of a doubleheader.
Game two was postponed due to continued rain.
The Wolverines’ 23 runs marked the first time they scored 20 runs in a game since May 10, 2022, and the margin of victory was the largest in the series with Ohio State. Michigan’s 16-run fourth inning was the most Michigan has scored in one frame since a 10-run third inning against Louisville on March 11, 2022.
Michigan (28-17, 12-10 Big Ten) scored all of its runs on only 13 hits, with every starter reaching base and scoring a run. Kurt Barr (Saint Joachim, Ont.), now 6-3, struck out four batters over five scoreless innings and allowed just three hits.
Already up 2-0 after three, U-M took advantage of an error, five hit-by-pitches, seven wild pitches and eight walks, sending 21 batters to the plate to score 16 runs on just four hits to blow the game open at 18-0. Michigan’s four hits in the inning came courtesy of a Greg Pace Jr. bunt single, a Keegan O’Hearn (Oshawa, Ont.) two-run double, a Cole Caruso RBI double, and a Noah Miller single.
Benny Casillas opened the fifth with a double, and two walks loaded the bases. Caruso singled through the left side to put Michigan ahead 20-0, and Miller’s run-scoring double added another to the scoreboard.
Robert Hamchuk made the score 22-0 in the sixth with his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to left, before OSU (11-31, 3-19 Big Ten) scored its lone run in the home half of the frame. A Miller sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning plated Michigan’s final run and Brandon Newland got the final three outs to finish off U-M’s big win.
Caruso led the way for Michigan with three hits, four RBI and added a pair of runs, and Jeter Ybarra and Colby Turner each scored three runs.
Saturday’s second game will be made up as part of a Sunday doubleheader.
