Baycats stun Cardinals to stay alive
HAMILTON, ONT. – With its season hanging in the balance, Barrie battled back from a five-run deficit to beat Hamilton 10-6 in Game 5 of their best-of-seven semifinal on Friday night at Bernie Arbour Stadium.
Hamilton still leads the series 3-2 heading into Game 6 on Saturday in Barrie.
Hayden Jaco drove in four runs for the Baycats. Three of them came on a bases-clearing double in the six-run sixth inning that turned the game around.
Noel McGarry Doyle went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, Brandon Hernandez drove in two on a pair of hits, Francisco Hernandez singled twice and scored twice, and Nolan Machibroda and Adam Odd both drove in a run.
Baycats starting pitcher Frank Garces hung around long enough for the win. He battled through 6 2/3 innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on 10 hits with two walks and nine punchouts. Carlos Sano earned the four-out save.
Darlin German, Dario Borrero and Reyny Reyes all had two hits and an RBI for the first-place Cards. Tyler Duncan, Carlos Dominguez and Jaden Brown drove in the other runs.
Chris Boatto took the loss in relief after yielding two runs on one hit and a hit batter. Luis Ramirez started on the mound and went 5 1/3 innings. He was charged with four runs on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

Jackfish take semifinal series lead
LONDON, ONT. – After dropping the first two games of its Canadian Baseball League semifinal against London, the Welland Jackfish has won three straight after a 5-2 victory on Friday night at Labatt Park.
Welland leads the best-of-seven series 3-2 and can advance to the final with a win on Saturday at home.
The Jackfish scored three of its runs in the top of the ninth to break a 2-2 tie. Gianfranco Morello provided the biggest hit with a two-run single off Majors’ closer Skylar Janisse, who was charged with three runs (two earned) on a hit and two walks to take the loss.
Daiki Abe went 2-for-5 with a solo home run to lead off the game, and James Smibert added an RBI single later in the inning.
Erik Johnson threw three scoreless innings of relief for the win. He struck out four. Abdiel Saldana started for Welland and allowed two runs on five hits with three walks and five punchouts.
London’s Trent Lenihan singled home a run, and Maikol Escotto added an RBI double in the Majors’ two-run third inning.
London starting pitcher Victor Payano went eight innings and gave up two runs on five hits. He struck out five and walked three.
