Official Barrie Baycats News Release

Barrie, Ont. — The Barrie Baycats have re-signed infielder and designated hitter Ryan Rijo, marking the first official player contract of the Canadian Baseball League (CBL) era.

“It means the world to me to be the first one to sign a contract in this league’s inaugural year,” said Rijo. “I try to be the best representative I can of this league. There’s only ever been positive things to say about what it’s done for me, my career, and my family.”

A key figure in the Baycats’ recent championship success, Rijo returns to Barrie as a four-time league champion and one of the most accomplished hitters in franchise history. In 2023, he set the single-season RBI record with 48, alongside 11 home runs, delivering one of the most dominant offensive seasons ever recorded by a Baycat.

“Ryan is the Barrie Baycats,” said Baycats President Josh Matlow. “I’m thrilled to have Ryan back in the lineup for the 2026 season and look forward to having his leadership back for our quest for our ninth championship!”

Rijo has been a steady power presence for the club, leading Barrie in home runs from 2022 through 2024. In 2025, he appeared in only eight games due to injury but made an immediate impact when active, posting a .448 average with four home runs and 10 RBIs.

“To be able to go around the city of Barrie and be recognized — it’s all I’ve ever hoped for and wanted,” Rijo said. “It’s a testament to how amazing our fans are.”

Originally drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 37th round of the 2018 MLB draft, Rijo brings professional experience, championship pedigree, and consistent offensive production as the Baycats enter a new chapter in the CBL.

“It’s funny — it’s a full-circle moment. I was drafted by the Phillies and didn’t sign, and now I’m being considered a professional baseball player. God works in mysterious ways,” said Rijo.

The Baycats open their 2026 Canadian Baseball League campaign on May 14 at Athletic Kulture Stadium.

“With me being healthy now, I’m chomping at the bit. I wish it was May already,” he said. “I’m excited for our fans. I’m excited to see everyone at the field again and see what this league can lead to.”

As for his message to Baycats fans ahead of 2016:

“Keep showing up, because without you we wouldn’t be able to do the things we’re doing.”
