What better way to celebrate Mother’s Day weekend than with some baseball?
Several conference tournaments are now complete, while the Division I season is in its final week.
Let’s take a look at which Canadians stood out as things heat up.
Bremner sets UCSB strikeout record
Tyler Bremner (San Diego, Calif.), whose parents hail from Mississauga and Queensville, Ont., is the new University of California, Santa Barbara career strikeouts leader. The right-hander fanned 10 in his start against Loyola Marymount on Friday night to bring his total to 275. He allowed one run on a hit and a walk in the 12-1 victory to improve to 4-4.
Evans, Marino come up with hits for Cloud County
A pair of Canadians led the way as Cloud County Community College won their Plains District Tournament opening series against Labette Community College.
Matthew Evans (Tillsonburg, Ont.) produced five hits, walked three times, drove in two and stole a base.
Joey Marino (Surrey, BC) had six hits, including two home runs in Game 1, a walk and eight RBIs. He went 4-for-5 with the two homers, a double and six RBI in the opener.
Gillespie strong again
Right-hander Blake Gillespie (Lucan, Ont.) appearing in this column is basically becoming a weekly occurrence. Last week, he lasted seven innings and surrendered two runs on four hits as the University of North Carolina at Charlotte edged the University of Alabama at Birmingham 8-7 in 11 innings. The former Ontario National walked three and struck out seven.
Fujie hits two homers
Yosuke Fujie (Mission, BC) went 2-for-2 with a solo shot, a three-run home run and a walk in Campbellsville’s 16-3 win over Ohio Christian. He then walked during an 18-0 win over Alice Lloyd as the Tigers punched their ticket to the National Christian College Athletic Association World Series.

Neufeld helps Macomb to opening round sweep
A four-run first inning was all Derek Neufeld (Leamington, Ont.) needed as he threw seven scoreless innings to help Macomb Community College blank Henry Ford College 9-0 in Game 1 of their best-of-three Region XII opening round series. He gave up seven hits, walked one and struck out two. Macomb would win Game 2 to secure the sweep.
Minaker magnificent for Barton
Ethan Minaker (Winnipeg, Man.) spun seven scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out six for Barton in their victory over Neosho County. With the win, he’s now 6-2.
Warrillow finishes with a bang
Dodge City Community College may have lost both games to Kansas City Kansas Community College in the Region VI first round series to see their season come to an end, but Calvin Warrillow (Toronto, Ont.) managed to finish strong. He went 3-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs in Game 1 and was hit by a pitch in Game 2.
Cassie helps Cardinals win Region XVI
Noah Cassie (Delta, BC) stroked five hits, walked and drove in six as Mineral Area College won the Region XVI tournament. In an 8-3 championship game victory over St. Charles, Cassie went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

McAskie mashes three-run homer
Aidan McAskie (Toronto, Ont.) belted a three-run home run as part of a five-hit series to help Charleston Southern take two of three from the University of North Carolina Asheville. Along with the hits, he also walked five times, drove in seven and was hit by a pair of pitches. In Game 2, he went 3-for-3 with the three-run home run, a walk, all seven RBIs and was hit by a pitch.
McKinnon lasts into the seventh
Bossier Parish Community College received 6 2/3 scoreless innings from Ben McKinnon (Surrey, BC) in a 7-0 victory over Alvin. He allowed four hits, walked four and struck out three.
Pacholko pitches well in loss, Walters hits for Douglas
Jeffrey Pacholko (Burnaby, BC) threw seven innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits in Douglas College’s 4-3 Game 1 loss to Shoreline. He issued three walks and struck out two.
Quinn Walters (New Westminster, BC) had five hits, a walk and three RBIs in the four-game series.
Carey continues strong freshman campaign
Freshman Tate Carey (Windsor, Ont.) scattered five hits over six scoreless innings to help Michigan salvage a win in their series against Nebraska. He issued two walks and struck out two in the Game 3 victory.

Cuthbertson completes sweep
Hayden Cuthbertson (Delta, BC) spun five scoreless innings for Miami University in their 5-0 Game 3 win over Akron. The southpaw allowed two hits and struck out four as the RedHawks swept the three-game series.
Murdoch hits home runs No. 10
Marshall’s Ethan Murdoch (Swift Current, Sask.) hit his 10th home run of the season, a two-run shot, and closed out a three-game sweep of Georgia State with five hits in all. He also walked three times and drove in three.
Beck hits solo shot
Carter Beck (Carnduff, Sask.) collected five hits and drove in four in Indiana State’s 2-1 series loss to Missouri State. He swatted a solo home run in the finale, a 7-6 win.
Dick hits grand slam
Cardell Dick (Abbotsford, BC) left the yard for a grand slam in the University of Nebraska Omaha’s 14-11 Game 2 win over South Dakota State. He then had a hit in a Game 3 loss as the Mavericks dropped the series.
Wouters named Region IX Player of the Week
Cory Wouters (Saskatoon, Sask.) hit .529 with three home runs and 12 RBIs for McCook Community College en route to being named Region IX Player of the Week. The 12 RBIs gave him 91 for the season, a new program single-season record.
Alberti named A10 Rookie of the Week
Lucas Alberti (Toronto, Ont.) had a big week for George Mason, pounding out nine hits to go along with three walks, 10 RBIs and three stolen bases in four games. He hit a grand slam in a Game 1 win over Davidson. For his efforts, he was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week.
Froehlich fantastic in Lone Star Conference tournament
After throwing six scoreless innings to defeat No. 7 Texas A&M Kingsville earlier in the Lone Star Conference tournament, University of Texas at Tyler right-hander Kyle Froehlich (Nipawin, Sask.) was tasked with going up against No. 1 seed Angelo State in Game 4. Although his team fell 3-2, Froehlich was far from the reason for the loss. He worked seven innings and allowed two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.
May 12 to 18 features more postseason play and the end of the Division I regular season slate.
