Official Welland Jackfish News Release

WELLAND, ONT. - The Welland Jackfish are bringing back infielder James Smibert for the 2026 season.

Smack returns to the Fish for his fourth season after joining the team in late 2025 following a successful two seasons with Trois-Rivières of the Frontier League.

Last season with the Fish, James recorded a .382 batting average with six doubles and eight RBIs in eight games. Before joining the Jackfish, he recorded a .208 average with two doubles, five home runs and 28 RBIs in 54 games with Trois-Rivières.

"JS is a consummate professional and has had success at every level," said Jackfish General Manager Jason McKay. "An integral part of both championship runs, we are excited to have him back for a full season in the CBL."

A fan favourite, Smibert will also spearhead the 2026 Jackfish Youth Baseball Camps and the Jackfish will feature his signature clothing line "Smack Smack" in the team shop this coming season.
