WELLAND, ONT. — The fish are flipping, and the crowd is grinning because the one, the only, the catcher who put the “WOW!” in postseason — Robert Mullen — is back at The Pond with the Welland Jackfish.
Last season, Mullen didn’t just hit baseballs—he launched them into orbit. The well-loved backstop took home Playoff MVP honours, slashing to a .356 average with an OPS over 1.000 and crushing two clutch home runs to help bring home the Dominico Cup.
“When building a roster, it’s absolutely essential to have a catcher who — for lack of a better phrase — sets the tone. In Robert, we believe we have the very best in the CBL," said Jackfish General Manager, Jason McKay.
In regular season action, Mullen has been a force of nature — even earning Player of the Week with a .625 average, including three homers and nine RBIs in one glorious stretch. He also hit .458 in May.
Prior to joining the Jackfish, Mullen spent six minor league seasons in the Oakland A’s organization, putting up a .251 batting average and a .338 on-base percentage. In 2019, he hit 11 home runs while playing for the double-A Midland RockHounds. On defence, Mullen posted a .977 fielding percentage and also threw out 30% of runners.
