On the day before his 30th birthday, Memphis Redbirds right-hander Curtis Taylor put together the best start of his professional career.
On Thursday, Taylor (Port Coquitlam, B.C.), who has reinvented himself as a starter this season, allowed just two hits, while striking out seven, in seven scoreless innings to lead the triple-A Redbirds to a 5-0 win over the Gwinnett Braves.
For his efforts, Taylor has been named the Canadian Baseball Network’s minor league Player of the Week (July 22 to July 27).
The veteran Canadian right-hander, who has almost exclusively worked as a reliever since 2017, also did not walk a batter in his dominant peformance.
Overall, Taylor is 5-3 with a 3.16 ERA in 22 games (15 starts) for the Redbirds. He has 83 strikeouts in 91 innings.
Selected in the fourth round of the 2016 MLB draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks, Taylor, a UBC alum, is now in his ninth professional season. He has also pitched in the Tampa Bay Rays, Toronto Blue Jays, Minnesota Twins and Chicago Cubs organizations. He spent 2024 in the Mexican League.
The 6-foot-6 righty also toed the rubber for Canada in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
With Taylor winning this week, it marked the third consecutive week that a pitcher has received the Canadian Baseball Network’s minor league Player of the Week honour.
It’s the first time Taylor has won the award.
