Right-hander Eric Cerantola (Oakville, Ont.) allowed just one hit in three scoreless relief appearances for the Kansas City Royals’ triple-A Omaha Storm Chasers this past week.
For his efforts, he has been named the Canadian Baseball Network minor league Player of the Week (Sep. 2 to Sep. 7).
It’s the first time he has received the honour this season.
Cerantola, 25, started his week by tossing a scoreless seventh inning against the triple-A Iowa Cubs on Tuesday. He permitted a hit and fanned two batters in the Storm Chasers’ 12-0 loss.
Two days later, the 6-foot-5, 225-pound right-hander struck out two and didn’t allow a hit in two innings in relief in a 4-3 loss to the Cubs.
Finally, on Sunday, Cerantola added two more Ks and kept the Cubs off the scoreboard for 1 1/3 innings in a 5-3 Storm Chasers’ defeat.
In total, the Canuck righty surrendered just one hit in 4 1/3 scoreless innings, while striking out six, in his three outings.
His performance lowered his season ERA with the Storm Chasers from 4.87 to 4.50. He now has 54 strikeouts in 44 innings in 33 triple-A appearances this season.
Selected by the Royals in the fifth round of the 2021 MLB debut, the Great Lake Canadians and Junior National Team alum is in his fifth minor league season.
