Right-hander Jonah Tong (Markham, Ont.) started and allowed just two hits and an unearned run, while striking out seven, in 5 1/3 innings to lead the double-A Binghamton Rumble Ponies to a 3-1 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Friday.
It was the 14th straight start by Tong for the Rumble Ponies in which he has permitted two earned runs or less.
For his efforts, he has been named the Canadian Baseball Network’s minor league Player of the Week (July 15 to July 20).
It’s the second time Tong has captured the award this season.
Fresh off his scoreless inning in the MLB Futures Game on July 12, Tong continued his first-half dominance by fanning two Fisher Cats in the first inning.
He followed that up with two Ks in each of the second and third frames and his seventh - and final strikeout - in the fifth.
His seven strikeouts give him an Eastern League-leading 132 on the season. The Toronto Mets alum and New York Mets’ prized pitching prospect also lowered his league-leading ERA to 1.71 and collected his seventh win of the season.
