In his most dominant start of the season for the triple-A Syracuse Mets, Jonah Tong tossed a one-hit shutout against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs to lead his club to a 6-0 win on Saturday.
The Markham, Ont., native fanned eight batters in the seven-inning contest.
For his efforts, he has been named the Canadian Baseball Network’s Minor League Player of the Week (Aug. 25 to Aug. 30).
It was his second time winning the award this season. He also captured the honour for the week of April 28 to May 3.
Tong threw 55 of his 88 pitches for strikes in the contest and struck out seven of the nine players in the IronPigs’ lineup. The game was completed in just one hour and 54 minutes.
Tong has been outstanding in August, posting a 2.39 ERA in five starts. He has 26 strikeouts in 26 1/3 innings and has held opponents to a .170 batting average.
In total, the Toronto Mets alum is 5-6 with a 4.54 ERA in 23 starts this season. He has also posted a 3.60 ERA in three starts for the big league Mets.
