First baseman Matt Coutney (Wetaskiwin, Alta.) belted three home runs and topped all Canadians in the affiliated minor league ranks with a .941 slugging percentage and 1.525 OPS in six games for the Los Angeles Angels’ High-A Tri-City Dust Devils last week.

For his efforts, he has been named the Canadian Baseball Network’s minor league Player of the Week (June 17 to June 22).

After starting his week with two singles and a walk in the Dust Devils’ 3-2 win over the Hillsboro Hops on June 17, Coutney proceeded to club a solo home run and walk twice in the following contest — another Dust Devils’ victory.

He followed that up with a solo shot and a single on Thursday to propel the Dust Devils to their third straight win.

Over the next two contests, the left-handed hitting slugger had a single and two walks before he socked his third home run - a three-run blast - on Sunday to lead the Dust Devils to 5-2 victory and a sweep of the six-game series. It was the first six-game sweep in franchise history.

In total last week, Coutney went 7-for-17 (.412 batting average) with seven walks, which was good for a .583 on-base percentage.

The 25-year-old Albertan is now hitting .273 with 10 home runs and 22 RBIs in 48 games with the Dust Devils this season.
