Memphis Redbirds infielder/outfielder Matt Lloyd (Okotoks, Alta.) topped all Canadians in the affiliated minor league ranks in batting average (.417), OPS (1.135) and RBIs (5) last week.
For his efforts, he has been named the Canadian Baseball Network’s minor league Player of the Week.
It’s the third time Lloyd has received the honour this season. He also won it for the weeks of April 21 to 27 and April 28 to May 4.
Batting sixth and DHing, Lloyd started off his week on Wednesday with two hits and two runs to help the Redbirds to a 5-4 win over the Norfolk Tides.
Starting at first base two days later, Lloyd belted a three-run home run and added a double and a single to finish the game with five RBIs to propel the Redbirds to a 13-2 victory over the Tides.
The versatile Okotoks Dawgs alum then played second base on Sunday. He didn’t pick up a hit in the Redbirds’ 10-9 loss to the Tides.
Overall, Lloyd, 29, is batting .292 with a .371 on-base percentage and an .806 OPS in 49 games for the Redbirds this season. He has four home runs, 10 doubles and 37 RBIs.
In winning the award this week, Lloyd breaks the streak of three consecutive pitchers taking home the honour.
