Tyler Black (Stouffville, Ont.) saved some of his best for the last week of the minor league regular season.
In five games this past week, the triple-A Nashville Sounds infielder topped all Canadians in hits (8), runs (4) and RBIs (5). He also batted .400 with a home run and two stolen bases.
For his efforts, he has been named the Canadian Baseball Network minor league Player of the Week (Sep. 16 to Sep. 21).
It’s the first time Black has won the award this season.
The 25-year-old infielder went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI in the Sounds’ 3-1 loss to the Cincinnati Reds’ triple-A Louisville Bats to start off last week.
He followed that up with his first of two, three-hit games during the week on Wednesday. Batting second and DHing, he was 3-for-5 with a double, a run and a stolen base in the Sounds’ 4-1 victory.
After a 1-for-5 performance on Thursday, he enjoyed his second three-hit game on Friday when he belted a three-run home run and added two singles in the Sounds’ 9-8 loss to the Bats.
He completed his regular season with two walks in the Sounds’ 11-4 win yesterday.
In total, Black was 8-for-20 (.400) and had a .480 on-base percentage and 1.130 OPS in five games last week.
Selected 33rd overall by the Brewers in the 2021 MLB draft, the Toronto Mets and Butler Prospects alum has also played five big league games this season.
