The San Francisco Giants have claimed right-hander Eric Cerantola off waivers from the Kansas City Royals.

The Giants made the announcement on Monday.

Cerantola has been assigned to the triple-A Sacramento River Cats.

Cerantola (Oakville, Ont.) had been designated for assignment by the Royals on Thursday. The move came after the 6-foot-5 righty walked six Tampa Bay Rays batters in 1 1/3 innings in an outing last Tuesday.

He had been called up for the second time this season by the Royals on June 27.

Cerantola made his MLB debut with the Royals on May 6 when he hurled a scoreless inning for the club in their 3-1 loss to the Cleveland Guardians.

The 26-year-old Canuck has been excellent in relief for the triple-A Omaha Storm Chasers this year, notching 14 saves while posting a 2.67 ERA in 27 appearances. He has struck out 43 batters in 30 1/3 innings.

His dominance in triple-A came on the heels of two scoreless relief outings for Canada at the World Baseball Classic.

His stock in the Royals’ system rose last season after he fanned 63 batters in 49 innings in 38 appearances (one start) in triple-A. He finished with a 2-2 record with a 4.04 ERA.

Selected in the fifth round of the 2021 MLB draft out of Mississippi State University by the Royals, he is in his sixth professional season. The Great Lake Canadians and Junior National Team alum owns a 10-16 record and a 3.59 ERA in 148 minor league appearances (24 starts). He has fanned 351 batters in 261 1/3 innings.
