Chicago Cubs outfielder Owen Caissie (Burlington, Ont.) has entered into Major League Baseball’s concussion protocol after he hit his head on the Wrigley Field wall while making an outstanding catch on a fly ball in the third inning in the Cubs’ 5-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday.
Caissie has been placed on the seven-day injured list.
“Owen has concussion symptoms,” Counsell told reporters after Saturday’s loss. “We’ll just evaluate him moving forward. He just kind of got gradually worse after running into the wall. About 45 minutes later, he couldn’t continue.”
The Fieldhouse Pirates and Junior National Team grad had been recalled from triple-A earlier that day.
Batting eighth and starting in right field in Saturday’s contest, Caissie went 0-for-2.
On September 1, Caissie, 23, was optioned to triple-A after going 5-for-24 (.208 batting average) with a homer and four RBIs in 11 games in his first taste of big-league action.
The Canadian slugger has been outstanding with triple-A Iowa this season. In 99 games, he possesses a .286/.386/.551 slash line, a .937 OPS and has belted 22 home runs. In total, he has 106 hits, including 28 doubles.
The left-handed hitting outfielder has played five seasons in the Cubs’ organization.
