The Okotoks Dawgs cruised to an 8-1 victory over the Fort McMurray Giants on Friday night, using a late offensive explosion and strong pitching to secure the win.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, the Dawgs eventually responded with a six-run eighth inning.
Fort McMurray struggled to generate offence, recording just four hits and failing to score over the final eight innings.
With the win, the Dawgs improved to 25-12 and sit atop the West Division, a game-and-a-half ahead of the Lethbridge Bulls and Sylvan Lake Gulls.
The Dawgs’ offence was led by Nash Crowell (Yarmouth, N.S.) and Connor Crowson (Okotoks, Alta.) who had four and three hits respectively. Jake Skaggs (Pittsburg State University) also contributed two hits and two runs for the Dawgs, while catcher Logan Grant (Calgary, Alta.) chipped in a double and an RBI and managed the pitching staff effectively.
On the mound, Jase Wessels (Bellevue University) started and allowed just one run on two hits, while striking out three, in six innings. Right-hander Chase Tucker (Mount Pearl, Nfld.) then earned the win with three scoreless innings in relief.
The Dawgs will play the Giants again on Saturday.
