The Okotoks Dawgs split a doubleheader with the Energy City Cactus Rats at Seaman Stadium on Thursday night.
Playing as the away team, the Dawgs emerged victorious in Game 1, thanks to a phenomenal effort from the pitching staff, which threw a combined seven-inning shutout to lead the Dawgs to a 9-0 win.
The Cactus Rats rebounded to win the second game 5-1.
Offensively, there were many standout performances for the Dawgs. Ricky Sanchez (Gonzaga University) went 3-for-8 with three RBIs in the two contests.
Leo Cote (Sherbrooke, Que.) and Aidan Rose (Calgary, Alta.) went 2-for-4 in the first game.
In the second game, Steven Elsner (Bellevue University) had two hits, including a solo home run.
As noted earlier, four pitchers combined for a seven-inning shutout in the first game. Starter Ryan Rembisz (University of Portland) pitched the first four innings. He was followed by Easton Corey (Linn-Benton Community College), Trey Mackwood (Calgary, Alta.), and Nolan Jackson (Hamilton, Ont.).
In Game 2, Gavin Wuschke (Regina, Sask.) started for the Dawgs and took the loss. Ryan McFarland (Calgary, Alta.) took over for Wuschke in the third and pitched a scoreless frame in relief. Frank Flores (University of Colorado Pueblo) and Reid Madariaga (Seattle University) also contributed scoreless innings.
The Dawgs will be back in action on Friday evening against the Cactus Rats, but this time they will be the home team.
