Elliott: Happy Canada Day

July 1, 2026

By Bob Elliott

Canadian Baseball Network

In a perfect world, there would not be 13 versions of the balk rule. Many I do not understand after all these years -- especially how a catcher can deceive the runner by not being in the catcher’s box.

And in a perfect world, there would be zero injuries.

Well, guess what?

It is Canada Day ... and everyone is healthy.

It’s time for the 26th annual Canadian Baseball Network Canada Day Team. And as manager George Gibson (London, Ont.), with his 1921 Pittsburgh Pirates were on their way to 90 wins, might have said, “I like this team.”

* * *

How can everyone be healthy at the same time?

Because Hall of Famers Fergie Jenkins (Chatham, Ont.) and Larry Walker (Maple Ridge, BC) plus Atlanta Braves boss Alex Anthopoulos (Montreal, Que.), arranged for the game when every Canuck was as healthy as a Budweiser Clydesdale.

Our on-field/sideline reporter is this year’s Jack Graney winner, Hazel Mae (Toronto, Ont.). In the booth are Dan Shulman (Thornhill, Ont.) and Joe Siddall (Windsor, Ont.) plus prepping to handle the pre- and post-game panels from the Canadian Baseball Network central desk are Sportsnet’s Jamie Campbell (Oakville, Ont.) and Shi Davidi (Toronto, Ont.).

In 2001, when we came up with the idea it was a mythical Canada Day lineup to celebrate our country’s best on our country’s birthday. Now Canada is coming off winning the Puerto Rico pool in the World Baseball Classic in March.

In our first year, 12 Canadians appeared in the majors, before Canada Day that year ... LHP Rheal Cormier (Cap Pele, NB) of the Phillies, OF Rob Ducey (Cambridge, Ont.) Montreal Expos, 3B Corey Koskie (Anola, Man.) Minnesota Twins, RHP Chris Reitsma (Calgary, Alta.) Cincinnati Reds, 1B Matt Stairs (Fredericton, NB) Chicago Cubs, RHP Jeff Zimmerman (Kelowna, BC) Texas Rangers, RHP Paul Quantrill (Port Hope, Ont.) Blue Jays, RHP Eric Gagne (Mascouche, Que.) Los Angeles Dodgers, INF Stubby Clapp (Windsor, Ont.), St. Louis Cardinals, Steve Green (Greenfield Park, Que.) of the Los Angeles Angels and Walker of the Colorado Rockies.

The current crop of major-league Canucks (23 plus, a handful of minor leaguers) is up five from 2025’s team — a long way from 1984 when there were two Canucks in the majors: Terry Puhl (Melville, Sask.) of the Houston Astros and Doug Frobel (Ottawa, Ont.) of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

And away we go … with our 2026 mythical lineup ...

1. SS Otto Lopez.

RHP Yariel Rodriguez allowed 136 hits with the Blue Jays (2024-26). Counting next season Rodriguez will be paid $20.8 million. The Cuban had success with the Chunichi Dragons in Japan. Here? Not so much. He was designated for assignment last month with a 4-11 record and a 4.04 ERA. And as is always the case when someone is added to the 40-man roster, someone is cut loose. When Rodriguez arrived, the Jays said goodbye to Otto Lopez (Montreal, Que.) in what was their worst infield mistake since trading Michael Young or drafting Russ Adams.

Lopez was claimed by the San Francisco Giants and they cut him too. Lopez has 358 hits all with the Marlins == save for six with the Jays. He leads the National League in hits this season with 111, nine more than four-time batting champ Luis Arraez of the San Francisco Giants.

It is Lopez’s fourth start and fifth time on the team.

2. RF Josh Naylor

Usually Naylor would hit fourth or fifth on Canada Day. Yet the speed he displayed in 2025 has earned him a bump in the order.

Now, whether it was Joey Votto (Etobicoke, Ont.), Justin Morneau (New Westminster, BC) or Freddie Freeman, we always had too many left-handed sluggers for not enough spots. It is the same this year with power, power and power in Vlad Guerrero, Freeman and Naylor. Since Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.) is the youngest and had played there before -- 145 starts with the San Diego Padres and the Cleveland Guardians in the outfield -- we’ll have him play right field. He went 30-for-32 being sneaky and fast on the base paths with the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Seattle Mariners in 2025.

This is Naylor’s eighth start and 10th time on the roster.

3, 1B Freddie Freeman.

Can you imagine anyone saying no to Freeman’s request to play for his team?

Maybe first-year Little League -- as an underager.

Baseball Canada’s answer was “no” since it already had Votto and Morneau to split 1B-DH duties. There was no room at the inn. But once Morneau retired and Votto was injured, Freeman made his debut with Canada in 2017 to honour his mother Rosemary, who died of cancer. What a tribute to his late mother. Growing up in southern California, his parents took him to see the Anaheim Ducks. “I thought it was a Canadian league we only went to see Canadian teams.” And woe be Freddie if he spent time eating popcorn or ice cream and not stand for the Canadian anthem.

Clubs don’t like to hit sluggers back-to-back. Jays manager Tim Johnson did it with RF Shawn Green and 1B Carlos Delgado in 1998. No. 3 hitter Green batted .278 with 35 homers and drove in 100 runs, while clean-up hitter Delgado hit .292 with 38 homers and 115 RBIs.

Freeman, who did a lot against the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2025 World Series, is making his 15th consecutive Canada Day start.

4. DH Vlad Guerrro

The slugger looked every bit his contract’s worth during post-season play in 2025, hitting .397 with eight homers and 15 RBIs against the New York Yankees, Seattle Mariners and the Los Angeles Dodgers. This season? Not so much. Not nearly as much.

Five of his first seven years, Guerrero (Montreal, Que.) has had 23 or more homers (topping out at 48 in 2021), six of seven years he had 69 or more RBIs (111 in 2021) and all seven years .772 OPS or better (with a 1.002 OPS in 2021).

Guerrero is in his ninth start and he has been at first base, DH and even two starts at third.

C Liam Hicks accepts the Stubby Clapp award from Clapp, left.and former junior National Team and Kansas State pitcher Griffin Hassell of Mizuno.

5. C Liam Hicks

Two years ago on Canada Day, the former Toronto Mets catcher was with the double-A Frisco RoughRiders. A month later, he was traded along with RHP Tyler Owens to the Detroit Tigers for former Markham Mariner C Carson Kelly.

A year ago, Hicks (Toronto, Ont.) was on the Marlins roster, scooped from the Tigers in the Rule V draft. And he’s still there as a C-1B.

He is making his first start and this is his third time on the roster.

6. CF Tristan Peters

Peters went 2-for-5 against the Kansas City Royals with a home run, three runs scored, one walk, and six RBIs last week in a 22-1 romp. The outfielder has offered manager Will Venable one of the more impactful options in the White Sox lineup to this point, slashing .286 with 17 doubles, with four home runs, 30 RBIs, 30 runs scored, and and a .782 OPS.

He’s fifth in Outs Above Average (OAA) and sixth in Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) among center fielders, tied for fifth by Statcast’s score for outfield jumps.

He edges out Owen Caissie (Burlington, Ont.) who has 12 doubles, 10 homers, 47 RBIs and a .747 OPS.

This is Peters’ (Winkler, Man.) first start and his third time on the roster.

Left winger Dustin Penner (Winkler, Man.) played nine years in the NHL with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings and the Washington Capitals.

7. LF Tyler O’Neill

O’Neill is a Langley Blaze grad with the Orioles. In his ninth year in the majors, he has had reached double figures in home runs three times, including belting 34 in 2021. A rare right-handed power hitter, O’Neill has struggled with this season, but the regular WBC performer hopes to get his home run hack back. He has 120 career homers, 10th over-all among Canadians and four behind Corey Koskie (Anola, Man.)

O’Neill (Maple Ridge, BC) has always showed for the WBC.

He will be making his 10th Canada Day start.

8. 2B Edouard Julien

From 16 homers in 109 games his rookie year in 2023 with the Minnesota Twwins, Julien had managed only two before Canada Day this year. But as the saying goes -- he’s the best we got. He has seven doubles, a triple, 18 RBIs and a .647 OPS.

This is the fifth start for Julien (Quebec, Que.) and his sixth time on the Canada Day roster.

9. 3B Abraham Toro

Another WBC vet, Toro is at triple-A Omaha awaiting for an injury or a slump to be promoted to the Royals. Toro is hitting .267 with 14 doubles, four triples, 12 homers and 49 RBIs with an .862 OPS in 69 games.

Toro (Longueuil, Que.) is making his sixth start and his seventh appearance on our team.

Junior National Team and Calgary Redbirds alum Michael Soroka (Calgary, Alta.) has had a great rebound season with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Photo: Baseball Canada

RHP Michael Soroka

Soroka started the season like a Brahama Bull coming out of Chute No. 4 at the Calgary Stampede beating the Detroit Tigers, his original team, the Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies and the Toronto Blue Jays. That four-game start saw him go 4-0 with a 2.78 ERA as well as 28 strikeouts in 22 2/3.

After a no-decision against the Chicago White Sox and losses to the Milwaukee Braves and Pittsburgh Pirates, he registered wins over the Texas Rangers and Colorado Rockies. He also had victories over the San Francisco Giants and Washington Nationals.

This is his second start and ninth time on our Canada Day roster.

Our Closer

Chilliwack Cougars and Junior National Team alum Cade Smith (Abbotsford, B.C.) leads the major leagues in saves in his role as closer with the Cleveland Guardians. Photo: Baseball Canada

Cade Smith

Smith leads the American League in saves with 26. He has a 3.05 ERA with an amazing 57 strikeouts in 38 1/3 innings in 36 games. He has walked only 10. That’s 10 more saves than he had in 2025 and he answered the questions “What will the Guardians do without (suspended) Emmanuel Clase?”

This is Smith’s second straight year as a closer and his third year on the roster.
