Elliott: Happy Canada Day, our 20th annual lineup -- a first: a brother tandem

By Bob Elliott

Canadian Baseball Network

Happy Canada Day!

First, some background. Our 20th annual mythical Canada Day roster was put together long before commissioner Bud Selig created the World Baseball Classic.

When that began we played Ross Atkins/Alex Anthopoulos/J.P. Ricciardi/Gord Ash/Pat Gillick putting together a July 1 lineup. We used a wide range of statistics to come up with the roster for the must-win event.

It was easy for this Canada Day.

Canada’s best hitter is the only pro hitter we know swinging in anger: 1B Jamie Romak (London, Ont.) who is with SK Wyverns in Korea. Romak owns a .268 average with eight homers and 29 RBIs.

Canada’s best pitcher is LHP Andrew Albers (North Battleford, Sask.) pitching for the Orix Buffaloes in Japan’s Pacific League. In two starts, Albers is 0-1 with a 3.60 ERA.

Our commissioner, national treasure Fergie Jenkins (Chatham, Ont.) with help from fellow Hall of Famer Larry Walker (Maple Ridge, BC) says Canada will field a team after a short camp. And it will be short, measured in hours.

Jenkins won 284 games in his 19-year major league career while Walker earned all-star berths five times, won three National League batting titles and an NL MVP.

Former North Delta Blue Jay teammates Justin Morneau (New Westminster, BC), an MVP winner with the Minnesota Twins and 17-game Colorado Rockies winner LHP Jeff Francis (North Delta, BC), Cardinals 1B coach Stubby Clapp (Windsor, Ont.), Mr. Canada on the international stage will be on the coaching staff.

Our team is deep when it comes to pitching coaches: RHPs Ryan Dempster (Gibsons, BC), former Cy Young award winner Eric Gagne (Magouche, Que.) and New York Yankees scout Denis Boucher (Lachine, Que.) are on board. Dempster was the anchor of our Canada Day team for 13 consecutive years, including six opening day starting assignments. Boucher pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays, the Cleveland Indians and the Montreal Expos.

Commissioner Jenkins (Chatham, Ont.), had help from important Canadian citizens: Pat Gillick, former boss of the Philadelphia Phillies and Hall of Fame GM of the Blue Jays, Paul Beeston (Welland, Ont.), former Jays president, GM Alex Anthopoulos (Montreal, Que.) of the Atlanta Braves; assistant GM Andrew Tinnish (Ottawa, Ont.) of the Jays, plus former GMs Doug Melvin (Chatham, Ont.) and Gord Ash (Toronto, Ont.) of the Milwaukee Brewers.

They have assured pitch limits will be lifted and everyone will be available.

Before you close your eyes to see the Blue Jays run out to their positions wearing their red tops to celebrate Canada Day, it is time for our Canada Day team.

Our 20th annual team includes major leaguers, minor leaguers and those playing in foreign lands.

When we started this process at the end of June 2001 it was a daydream. In 1984 there were only two Canadians in the majors: Terry Puhl (Melville, Sask.) and Doug Frobel (Ottawa, Ont.). Teams have named their respective 60-man rosters and in all 13 Canadians can be found

This July 1 we have two from the same household: San Diego Padres’ Josh Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.) and his younger brother Noah Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.) of the Cleveland Indians.

Manager Ernie Whitt (Clinton Township, Mich. a Windsor suburb) and Greg Hamilton (Ottawa, Ont.) finalized the roster.

In June, five Canadians were selected in the five-round draft, as in 2019 when five were chosen in the first 10 rounds. OF Owen Caissie (Burlington, Ont.) went in the second, signing with the Padres for a $1,200,004 bonus.

The lineup:

Langley Blaze grad Tyler O’Neill (Maple Ridge, BC)

Langley Blaze grad Tyler O’Neill (Maple Ridge, BC)

Leading off is centre fielder Tyler O’Neill from Walker’s home (Maple Ridge, BC) in his fifth Canada Day start. In 60 games with the Cards last year he hit .262 with 16 RBIs and a .723 OPS.

Etobicoke Rangers grad Joey Votto.

Etobicoke Rangers grad Joey Votto.

Batting second is Canada’s highest-paid athlete, Joey Votto (Etobicoke, Ont.) of the Reds. Years ago Votto volunteered to play left field when Justin Morneau and Freddie Freeman were active. The Etobicoke Rangers grad is in his 13th start and 15th appearance. He batted .261 with 15 homers, 47 RBIs and a .768 OPS in 142 games.

Making his eighth Canada Day start and hitting third is DH Freddie Freeman of the Atlanta Braves. Freeman was WBC-eligible since his parents grew up in Windsor, Ont. Freeman kept earning compliments in 2019 as he hit .295 with 38 homers, 127 RBIs and a .938 OPS in 158 games.

Vladimir Guerrero swings for the fences

Hitting fourth and playing third base in his third start is Vlad Guerrero (Montreal, Que.) of the Blue Jays. He didn’t knock down all the fences he was supposed to, but he was No. 1 in hits by rookies in the AL. He batted .272 with 15 homers, 69 RBIs and a .772 OPS in 123 games.

London Badgers grad Jamie Romak (London, Ont.)

London Badgers grad Jamie Romak (London, Ont.)

Batting fifth and playing left field is Jamie Romak (London, Ont.) in his third start and eighth year on the team. Romak is also in his fourth season with SK Wyverns in Korea where he is hitting .262 with eight homers and 29 RBIs in 47 games. He has hit 111 homers in 417 games since going to Korea. He set a Canadian record for 43 homers by a minor leaguer or a player in foreign ball in 2018.

Josh Naylor - dugout - 2 copy.jpg

Next is right fielder Josh Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.) of the San Diego Padres. This is Naylor’s second start and fourth time on the team. Naylor hit .249 in 2019 as a rookie with eight homers, 32 RBIs and a .719 OPS in 94 games.

Hitting seventh is catcher Russell Martin (Montreal, Que.) was with the Los Angeles Dodgers last year, but has yet to sign for 2020. Last year he hit .220 with four homers, 20 RBIs and a .667 OPS in 83 games.

ABC grad Abraham Toro

At second and hitting eighth is Abraham Toro (Longueuil, Que.) who combined to hit 17 homers and 80 RBIs at triple-A Round Rock and double-A Corpus Christi in 114 games. Toro hit .218 in 25 games with two homers and nine RBIs after being promoted to the Astros.

Former Ontario Blue Jays INF Daniel Pinero.

Last but certainly not least is shortstop Daniel Pinero (Toronto, Ont.) of the Detroit Tigers system. He split time last season at triple-A Toledo and double-A Erie hitting .235 in 116 games.with a .776 OPS as he had six homers and 50 RBIs.

Ex-Langley Blaze LHP James Paxton (Ladner, BC) shown with teammates at the 2006 18U World Cup in Cuba.

Getting the start on the mound will be James Paxton (Ladner, BC). The New York Yankees lefty will be making his fifth start in his seventh selection. RHP Mike Soroka’s numbers are just as good, but to take the crown you have to out perform the champ. Paxton went 15-6 with a 3.82 ERA in 29 starts as he walked 55 and struck out 186 in 150 2/3 innings.
