The Okotoks Dawgs run a fantastic program.

If their 18U Black team being ranked second in all of North America wasn’t enough to convince you, then perhaps the whopping 18 players they had selected to this year’s Canadian Futures Showcase will.

That means that they’re making up over a tenth of all the athletes present at this eleventh iteration of the event. Of those ball-players, one of them also happens to be one of the youngest to make the trip.

Ethan Renaud (Okotoks, Alta.), at only 15-years-old, will compete against some of the nation’s best at Rogers Centre over the next few days.

Joe McFarland of Alberta Dugout Stories chatted with the prospect ahead of the showcase, but how is he feeling now that he’s touched down in Toronto?

“I couldn’t imagine being down on the field and playing here (before arriving),” Renaud explained. “It’s amazing to be able to play somewhere like this with a bunch of high-level guys.”

The excitement has caused a bit of nervousness, he admitted, which could be seen as he popped up his first few swings during scout day batting practice. He recovered quickly though and lined the rest into the outfield with exit velocities nearly touching 100 mph.

Having so many Dawgs players there has helped though, as he's been hanging out with them and meeting new people. He's even rooming with fellow 15-year-old Dawg Josh Mills (Leduc, Alta.).

As Renaud works through the week, his play should speak for itself. His 6-foot-3, 180-pound frame has leant itself to some excellent physical tools on the diamond such as his arm.

What he most wants scouts to see, however, is his teamwork and competitive spirit.

“I hope they see that I'm a good teammate and a well-rounded player,” he said. “I always try to be around and compete with the best.”

The young prospect will certainly get a chance to do just that in the coming days with Team Navy. This event adds on to his rapidly growing pedigree which includes a 15U Nationals appearance earlier this year.

Team Navy's first game of the tournament goes at 9 p.m. Tuesday against Team Royal. Renaud will look to make an impact with all the lessons he's gathered from Okotoks.

“The amount of people seeing you hit is unmatched from what the Dawgs are offering. I'd like to thank all of the Dawgs coaches for getting me here, they're always there to help with my swing.”
