A year after spurning the Blue Jays, USC shortstop Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek has agreed to a $150,000 signing bonus with the New York Yankees, who selected him a few days ago in the 20th round of the MLB draft.

The son of 1990s Expos shortstop Mark Grudzielanek was drafted by Toronto in 2024 but the Jays didn't meet the contract demands of his mother Danielle Martin, who was seeking $500,000.

Bryce hit .294 with eight homers, 41 RBIs and 44 runs this past season at USC under coach Andy Stankiewicz, who played for the Expos in 1996-97.

Bryce's brother Brody was also available in the MLB draft but has opted to go to the University of Hawaii this fall.

"The Angels and Rangers came with an offer for Brody but I refused to devalue him and just send him to the wolves with only one year of pitching under his belt,'' Ms. Martin told this writer.

“Although his stuff is good and he's massive in size (6-foot-5), the maturity isn't there and without a bigger monetary investment and security to his development, there is no way I would've been that irresponsible with him.”
