Elliott: Happy Canada Day -- our 25th annual all-Canuck lineup

Who better to welcome you to our 25th annual Canada Day team than Canadian Hall of Famers Larry Walker (left, Maple Ridge, BC) and RHP Fergie Jenkins (Chatham, Ont.)

July 1 2025

By Bob Elliott

Canadian Baseball Network

May we wish one and all a “Happy Canada Day.”

They said this idea would not last ... away back in 2001.

Yet, here we are with our 25th annual Canada Day lineup. Now, the guessing games on ‘What would a Canadian lineup look like?’ are played at water coolers, ball parks and at Rogers Centre. That’s because the 2026 World Baseball Classic takes place next spring -- less than nine months away.

Back in 2001 when we came up with the idea it was a mythical Canada Day lineup to celebrate our country’s best on our country’s birthday.

We usually list all the Canuck executives at this time of the year, but besides Atlanta Braves boss Alex Anthopoulos (Montreal, Que.), plus Hall of Famers Fergie Jenkins (Chatham, Ont.) and Larry Walker (Maple Ridge, BC) the rest are busy working on something special at the moment ... stay tuned ...

The current crop of major-league Canucks (18 plus two WBC eligibles) is up four from 2024’s team a long way from 1984 when there were two Canucks in the majors: Terry Puhl (Melville, Sask.) of the Houston Astros and Doug Frobel (Ottawa, Ont.) of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Our Canadian Baseball Network lineup is better than the usual WBC lineup. For our Canada Day team, everyone wants to play. Everyone is healthy. Everyone has clearance from their big-league organization.

In 2001, our first year, 12 Canadians appeared in the majors, before Canada Day that year ... LHP Rheal Cormier (Cap Pele, NB) of the Phillies, OF Rob Ducey (Cambridge, Ont.) Montreal Expos, 3B Corey Koskie (Anola, Man.) Minnesota Twins, RHP Chris Reitsma (Calgary, Alta.) Cincinnati Reds, 1B Matt Stairs (Fredericton, NB) Chicago Cubs, RHP Jeff Zimmerman (Kelowna, BC) Texas Rangers, RHP Paul Quantrill (Port Hope, Ont.) Blue Jays, RHP Eric Gagne (Mascouche, Que.) Los Angeles Dodgers, INF Stubby Clapp (Windsor, Ont.), St. Louis Cardinals, OF Larry Walker (Maple Ridge, BC), Colorado Rockies and Steve Green (Greenfield Park, Que.).

Upstairs in the TV booth Dan Shulman (Thornhill, Ont.) and Joe Siddall (Windsor, Ont.) and prepping to handle the pre- and post-game panels from the Canadian Baseball Network central desk are Sportsnet’s Jamie Campbell (Oakville, Ont.) and Minnesota Twins broadcaster Justin Morneau (New Westminster, BC) with Hazel Mae (Toronto, Ont.) down on the field.

And away we go …

Former ABC SS Otto Lopez (Montreal, Que.)

1. SS Otto Lopez

Trailing the Arizona Diamondbacks by four runs entering the eighth on Saturday, Miami rallied for three runs, beginning with a two-run homer by Lopez. C Liam Hicks (Toronto, Ont.) delivered a run-scoring single later in the inning, bringing the Marlins within a run. Miami tied the game in the ninth and won in extras. The Montreal resident is 8-for-11 stealing bases.

In his last seven games before Canada Day, Lopez is now batting .433 with nine runs, two doubles, two home runs and 15 RBIs. His RBIs are the most in any six-game span for a Marlins hitter since Giancarlo Stanton in 2017. He is hitting .260 with nine doubles, eight homers, 40 RBIs and a .723 OPS.

He owns a team-leading 25 hits and 30 RBIs with runners in scoring position with a .972 OPS. Per Baseball Savant, his defense ranks in the 96th percentile and offensively in the 94th percentile.

It is Lopez’s third start and fourth time on the team.

1B Freddie Freeman wears his heart on his sleeve and a Canadian flag over his shoulders playing for Canada as a tribute to his late mother Rosemary.

2. 1B Freddie Freeman

Hitting second is Freeman of the Dodgers, WBC-eligible since his parents grew up in Windsor, Ont. and Peterborough. He has played for Canada twice to honour his late mother Rosemary. He sits second in the NL batting race with a .312 average behind teammate Will Smith (.319) and is ninth in OPS with .895. He has 21 doubles, a triple, 10 homers, 43 RBIs and an .895 OPS. His 529 career doubles are tied for 42nd all-time (with Al Oliver), as the only active player in the top 100, five behind Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig.

On Saturday, he hit his first home run since May 11 and tallied his seventh three-hit game of the season, going 3-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored in a 9-5 loss to Kansas City. Freeman became the 91st player in big-league history to reach 4,000 total bases in his career. He is now at 4,003, one shy of catching Aramis Ramirez for 90th place.

Freeman is making his 13th consecutive Canada Day start.

Ontario Blue Jay grad Josh Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.) will bat third.

3. RF Josh Naylor

Batting third and playing right field since here — like the days of Justin Morneau (New Westminster, BC), Joey Votto (Etobicoke, Ont.) and Freeman, we are deep when it comes to left-handed sluggers -- is Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.) of the Arizona Diamondbacks. He has hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games, batting .396 with four doubles, three homers, 14 RBIs and six walks. In June, he batted .311 with four doubles, three homers, 16 RBIs and seven walks.

Naylor is batting .304 with 18 doubles, a triple, 10 homers, 53 RBIs and an .834 OPS in 78 games as he heads for free agency. His 89 hits are third among all first basemen, behind Pete Alonso (93) and Yandy Díaz (91). Since 2023, his 258 RBIs are third among first basemen, behind Matt Olson (289) and Alonso. He is six career homers shy of 100.

This is Naylor’s seventh start and ninth time on the roster.

4. DH Vlad Guerrero

Hitting cleanup is Guerrero (Montreal, Que.) of the Blue Jays. He has reached base safely in 74 of 82 games this season (90.2%), trailing only Kyle Schwarber (77) and Matt Olson (75). Over his last 28 games, is hitting .297 with eight doubles, four homers, 19 RBIs, 20 runs and 14 walks.

Four years ago on Canada Day, Guerrero had a 1.089 OPS. In 2023 he was .787, in 2022 he had an .830 mark and he was at .799 last year and this year he is at .840. He is also hitting .282 and has 17 doubles, 12 homers and 44 RBIs.

In his 26 games against AL East opponents this season, he is hitting .305 with a .922 OPS with 10 extra-base hits, 19 RBIs. His career .908 OPS against the Yankees is the highest among active players and is the third-highest in franchise history trailing only José Bautista (.953) and Carlos Delgado (.925).

Guerrero is in his eighth start and he has been at first base, DH and even two starts at third.

Langley Blaze grad Tyler O’Neill (Maple Ridge, BC).

5. LF Tyler O’Neill

Batting fifth in left field is O’Neill from Walker’s hometown (Maple Ridge, BC), who earned back-to-back Gold Glove awards in 2020-21 with the Cardinals. Bothered by injury this season, he has only played in 24 games, batting .188 with three doubles, a triple, two homers, 10 RBIs and a .605 OPS. Yet he rose to the occasion in 2023 when he and Freeman were the only major-league position players to suit up for Canada at the World Baseball Classic.

O’Neill has 111 career homers, 10th among Canucks. He is behind Walker (383), Joey Votto (Etobicoke, Ont.) 356, Matt Stairs (Fredericton, NB) 265, Justin Morneau (New Westminster, BC) 247, Jason Bay (Trail, BC) 222, Jeff Heath (Fort William, Ont.) 194, Russell Martin (Montreal, Que.) 191, Guerrero 171 and Corey Koskie (Anola, Man.) 124. O’Neill has had two stints on the injured list this season: 10 days in May with a right shoulder inflammation and again with a left shoulder impingement. O’Neill signed a three-year $49.5 million deal with Baltimore in the off season. He has spent 10 games on rehab assignments at triple-A Norfolk, double-A Chesapeake and class-A Aberdeen.

He will be making his ninth Canada Day start.

Former ABC 3B Abraham Toro (Longueuil, Que.)

6. 3B Abraham Toro

Triston Casas was supposed to be the Boston Red Sox first baseman. He was carried off the field on a stretcher with a torn patellar tendon in his left knee last month. Next, management asked DH Rafael Devers take over at first. Devers, upset he lost his job at third, refused. Eventually Devers was moved to the San Francisco Giants for Jordan Hicks and Kyle Harrison plus minor leaguers Jose Bello and James Tibbs. So, Toro steps into the first base spot once occupied by Jimmie Foxx. George Scott, Mo Vaughn. Kevin Youkilis and (Dr. Strange Glove) Dick Stuart.

Toro reached base a career-high-tying four times Saturday in Boston’s romp over Toronto and has hit safely in 27 of his previous 38 games batting .298, with 21 runs scored, nine doubles, five homers, 15 RBIs and six walks. He has played in 42 of the Sox’ 52 games since being recalled from triple-A Worcester, including 35 at first and seven at third.

Toro is making his sixth appearance on our team and his fifth start.

ABC’s Edouard Juiien (Ancienne-Lorette, Que.) homering during 2023 WBC.

7. 2B Edouard Julien

Julien led off for Canada at the 2023 WBC at Chase Field. He has struggled since his rookie season with the Minnesota Twins. This year he is batting .198 with five doubles, two homers, eight RBIs and a .607 OPS in 29 games.

Julien (Ancienne-Lorette, Que.), who started the season in the majors, is now with the triple-A St. Paul Saints where he is hitting .259 with four doubles, a triple, six homers, 19 RBIs and an .822 OPS in 47 games.

He is making his third start and is on our roster for the fourth time.

Ontario Blue Jays grad C Bo Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.)

8. C Bo Naylor

In the minors, Bo hit more home runs than his brother Josh. The eldest hit 50 homers in 449 games (1,762 at-bats), while Bo went deep 57 times in 405 games (1,461 at-bats) coming through the Cleveland system. In 62 games he has six doubles, a triple, nine homers, 20 RBIs and a .631 OPS for the Guardians. He is catching for second-place Cleveland, who made him a first-round pick in 2018 (29th overall).

Naylor is tied for seventh among big league pitch-framers this year. He trails Alejandro Kirk, Patrick Bailey, Dillon Dingler, teammate Austin Wells, ex-Jay Gabriel Moreno and Carlos Narváez.

This is Bo Naylor’s fourth start and fifth time on the roster.

Former Toronto Mets OF Denzel Clarke (Pickering, Ont.)

9. CF Denzel Clarke

Toronto sandlot fans knew all about Clarke for years. Maybe you did not a year ago. Maybe you heard Sportsnet’s Tim Micallef say “former Toronto Met Denzel Clarke,” but you certainly know who Clarke (Pickering, Ont.) is after he was promoted to the Athletics on May 23. For a record four straight weeks, he won the Electric Play of the Week award. He stole extra-base hits from Jorge Mateo and Carlos Santana, plus home runs from Alejandro Kirk and Nolan Schanuel. He is the real deal. One veteran scribe said, “The catch in Anaheim (off Schanuel) was similar to Ken’s Griffey climbing the wall at Yankee Stadium to steal a home run from Jesse Barfield.”

The man whose stride has been compared to Devon White -- when Clarke was hitting inside-the-park homers on back-to-back nights -- is an acrobat when it comes to scaling walls. In his first 31 games with the A’s, he is hitting .198 with two doubles, two homers and five RBIs with a .520 OPS.

This is Clarke’s first start and third year on our Canada Day dream team.

Victoria Eagles Nick Pivetta (Victoria, BC) gets the starting assignment on Canada Day.

Starter _ RHP Nick Pivetta.

Pivetta was brilliant on Wednesday afternoon -- again, when the Padres needed him. In a tense 1-0 victory over the Nationals at Petco Park, he struck out 10 over seven scoreless innings, while allowing three singles and zero walks. Nary a Washington hitter reached scoring position. Pivetta has completed seven innings in four starts this year, while the rest of the Padres starters have gone four times all together.

Pivetta was the first starter to get four wins at home this season. Since the mound was lowered in 1969, he became the second pitcher to win their first two home starts of a season while allowing zero runs and five or fewer total baserunners, joining Greg Maddux (1997). In games Pivetta throws six-plus innings, he owns a perfect 6-0 record with a 1.67 ERA clip. Pivetta has posted a staff-leading 8 quality starts in his 15 outings, while the rest of the rotation has combined for 17 quality starts. He is joined by Sonny Gray, Max Fried and Kris Bubic as the only four hurlers to own three separate seven scoreless inning outings.

This is Pivetta’s third start as No. 1 and his eighth time on the team.

Former Chilliwack Cougar does have a long stride and will stive to close the door in a save situation.

Closer _ RHP Cade Smith

And to close things out, our team will turn to Smith. Recently, he has been bothered by back spasms, possibly because he has worked in a team-leading 36 games to start the season, earning a hold in 15 appearances. He is 2-2 with a 2.36 ERA and two saves. Smith was dominant in 2024 (6-1, 1.91, 103 strikeouts in 75 1/3 innings) and hasn’t allowed a homer in 78 straight games, which is longest active streak in the majors.

His 15 holds are second on the team and tied for 13th in majors, thanks to the fourth-highest strikeout/per nine innings among qualified relievers in 2025 with a 13.89 rate. His 53 whiffs are tied for sixth among relievers. His 103 strikeouts in 2024 marked a Cleveland rookie record and tied for third for most strikeouts in a single season with Paul Shuey’s 1999 campaign.

Looking after our pitchers will be: New York Yankees scout Denis Boucher (Lachine, Que.), Jeff Francis (North Delta, BC), Eric Gagne (Mascouche, Que.) and Paul Quantrill (Port Hope, Ont.) of the Blue Jays. We’ll have as many pitching coaches as the Toronto Blue Jays have hitting coaches.
