Blue Jays from Away

The Blue Jays minor league clubs won just one game on Friday in four games worth of action.

Buffalo Bisons 1, Norfolk Tides (BAL) 4

The triple-A Buffalo Bisons had their offence stall, getting just six hits in a 4-1 loss to the Norfolk Tides.

Anthony Alford was 2/4 with the club's only extra-base hit, his third double of the season but his batting average is still languishing at .173 on the season. Reese McGuire is hitting .237 with a pair of singles and the club's only RBI while Roemon Fields was 2/3 but was caught stealing.

Sean Reid-Foley got the start and was fairly efficient through four innings, giving up just two singles and a walk up to that point but ran into trouble in the fifth, walking three of his first four batters and then giving up back to back doubles, totaling three runs before getting out of the inning. A leadoff home run in the sixth before retiring the side gave Reid-Foley the unenviable line of four runs in six innings on five hits and four walks with four strikeouts in what was really a solid start except for one inning and one pitch to start the sixth. Conor Fisk finished the game, throwing two scoreless frames, striking out one.

Roster Notes: Jonathan Davis, Thomas Pannone and Javy Guerra were called up by the Blue Jays.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 10, Binghamton Rumble Ponies (NYM) 5

The double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats's offence continued to click, scoring 10 runs against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies and getting Hector Perez an eight-run lead before he even took the mound in a 10-5 win on Friday night.

Santiago Espinal opened things up with a two-run blast in the first inning while Alberto Mineo went deep as the very next batter. Espinal, however, had a special night, going 4/6 with a home run, a double, five RBI and a run. Chad Spanberger also had a strong game, going 3/5 with a run and Mineo was 1/3 with the solo blast and three walks. Forrest Wall was 1/5 with a walk, an RBI and a run and Gunnar Heidt was 1/5 with a stolen base. Vinny Capra was on base four times, going 1/2 with three walks and three runs, adding a stolen base.

Hector Perez had another solid start, allowing only two runs on four hits and two walks in five innings, striking out seven for his second win of the year. Jake Fishman allowed a run on three hits in two innings, striking out a pair while Bryan Baker gave up two runs on a hit and three walks with two strikeouts in 2/3 of an inning. Ty Tice came in with the bases loaded, allowing one inherited runner to score, walking one and pitching the final 1 1/3 innings for the save.

Roster Notes: The Blue Jays traded for veteran outfielder Patrick Kivlehan and assigned him to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.

Dunedin Blue Jays 4, Clearwater Threshers (PHI) 8

Nick Allgeyer had a rare hiccup as a starting pitching in 2019 as the class-A Advanced Dunedin Blue Jays took an 8-4 loss to the Clearwater Threshers.

Allgeyer went 5 1/3 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and a walk with five strikeouts, taking his third loss of the year. Emerson Jimenez allowed just a walk and struck out one in 1 2/3 innings of relief, allowing the one runner he inherited to score. Matt Shannon gave up two runs on two hits and two walks with one strikeout in the eighth and Brad Wilson struck out the side but allowed an unearned run on a hit in the ninth inning.

The Blue Jays knocked out 10 hits including a pair from Cal Stevenson who's brought his batting average up to .233 after a rough start. He also drove in a run and scored one. Cullen Large was 2/5 with an RBI and a run while Christian Williams was 2/4 with a walk and a run. Kevin Vicuna was 2/4 with a run and a stolen base while Samad Taylor was 1/4 with an RBI and Hunter Steinmetz was 1/4.

Lansing Lugnuts 2, Kane County Cougars (ARI) 6

The low-A Lansing Lugnuts couldn't score in the early going, only plating two runs in the ninth inning and falling 6-2 to the Kane County Cougars.

The Lugnuts had just six hits including two from Jake Brodt who drove in a run. Rafael Lantigua was 1/4 and Otto Lopez (Montreal, Que.) was 1/3 with a walk and a run. Nick Podkul was 1/3 with a walk and Ryan Gold was 1/4 with a run.

Sean Wymer was on the hill to start for the Lugnuts, going only two innings, walking four, allowing two runs on a home run (the only hit he allowed) and striking out one, running up a pitch count of 48 in just the two frames. Mike Pascoe was pressed into work, giving up three runs on four hits and three walks and needing 47 pitches to get through just 1 2/3 innings with one strikeout.
