Left-hander J.P. Stevenson (New Glasgow, P.E.I.) was named Sport P.E.I.’s 2018 intercollegiate male athlete of the year on Tuesday.

The Canuck southpaw, who was named to the Canadian Baseball Network’s 2018 All-Canadian First Team as the top collegiate left-handed pitcher, faced steep competition from the other two finalists volleyball player Brett Butler (Holland College) and wrestler Ligrit Sadiku (Brock University) for the honour,

The winner was announced on Tuesday at the 45th annual awards night at the Holland College’s Florence Simmons Performance Hall.

Stevenson recently completed an outstanding senior year with the NCAA Division l Canisius Golden Griffins in which he topped his conference in wins (10) and strikeouts (93) and helped propel his club to a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) title.

For his efforts, on top of his Canadian Baseball Network honour, he was named 2018 MAAC Pitcher of the Year and 2018 MAAC Championship Most Valuable Player. He was also named to the 2018 All-America Third Team and 2018 ABCA All-New England Region First Team.
