LIMA, Peru – Phillippe Aumont (Gatineau, Que.) tossed six scoreless innings while Tristan Pompey (Mississauga, Ont.) went 4-for-4 with two RBI to lead Canada’s men’s baseball team to a 10-0 win over Argentina to open the Pan Am Games baseball competition.

Catcher Jordan Procyshen (Calgary, Alta.) contributed two RBI doubles, including one in the fourth as Canada exploded for four runs in the frame while Jordan Lennerton (Langley, BC) smacked a two-run single in the eighth to give Canada the win via the mercy rule.

“I’m really proud of the way our group came out and played today,” said Manager Ernie Whitt. “Phillippe threw the ball really well and set the tone for everything.

“We got some big hits, Pompey hit the ball well and so did (Procyshen). I’m happy with the start.”

Aumont scattered four hits on the mound and had six strikeouts as he kept Argentina’s hitters in check throughout his 61-pitch outing.

He was tested in the second inning with runners on the corners and nobody out but got a strikeout and double play to get out of trouble.

“I’m happy with the way I pitched but more importantly I’m really excited for our team and how we played today,” said Aumont. “It’s a great start to the tournament and we just need to keep it going.”

Canada opened the scoring in the second inning as Pompey drilled a double to left field and scored from third base when Procyshen doubled to left.

The duo teamed-up again in the fourth with Procyshen connecting on his second double of the game to plate Pompey before Jonathan Malo’s (Jolliette, Que.) fielder’s choice allowed Rene Tosoni (Port Coquitlam, BC) to trot in from third. Wes Darvill (Langley, BC) capped the frame with a two-run single to centre as Canada went up by five runs.

Pompey picked up his fourth hit of the game in the seventh with a two out single to right field that brought in Connor Panas (Etobicoke, Ont.) and Lennerton.

RJ Freure (Burlington, Ont.) took over for Aumont on the mound in the seventh and got a nice grab from Tyson Gillies (Vancouver, BC) for the first out before recording two of his four strikeouts over two scoreless innings of work.

UP NEXT: Canada will face Cuba on Tuesday (8 p.m. E.T.) at the Del Triunfo Baseball Field in Lima as Group B action continues…RHP Jordan Balazovic (Mississauga, Ont.) is scheduled to start on the mound for Canada.
