INF/OF Jared Young belted a two-run home run in the first inning to help the New York Mets to a 6-4 win over the Chicago White Sox at Citi Field on Tuesday.
It was the Prince George, B.C. native’s first home run with the Mets since his call-up on Saturday.
In four games with the Mets since being promoted, Young is 2-for-8. His other hit was a double that he also recorded on Tuesday.
The Mets signed Young to a major league contract in December, but he started the season with the triple-A Syracuse Mets. In 22 games with them, he batted .259 with five home runs and 21 RBIs. He posted a .506 slugging percentage and an .877 OPS.
Chosen in the 15th round of the 2017 MLB draft by the Chicago Cubs, the Okanagan Athletics alum played parts of six seasons in the minors before he made his MLB debut with the Cubs in 2022, going 5-for-19 (.263 batting average) in six games that September.
He returned for two big league stints with the Cubs in 2023 in which he had eight hits – including three triples and two home runs – while scoring eight runs. His final promotion that season came on the heels of his excellent triple-A campaign with the Iowa Cubs that saw him bat .310 with 21 home runs and 72 RBIs in 90 games.
Young was then selected off waivers from the Cubs by the St. Louis Cardinals in November 2023. He proceeded to bat .285 with 11 home runs and a .411 on-base percentage in 74 games with the triple-A Memphis Redbirds in 2024 before his contract was purchased by the Doosan Bears of the Korea Baseball Organization. Overseas, he was outstanding, hitting .326 with 10 home runs and 39 RBIs with a 1.080 OPS in just 38 games.
Young also homered and had three runs in four games for Canada in the World Baseball Classic in March 2023.
