He’s been a mound monster for the Miller Express.

Westin Walls, a 6-foot-5 right-handed pitcher, was both a workhorse and a strikeout artist when he took the bump for Moose Jaw.

The towering Texan led the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) in earned run average (minimum 54 innings pitched), with a 4.04 ERA during the 2026 regular season.

He also led the circuit in innings pitched (82 1/3), posted a 6-1 record, and set a new single-season record for strikeouts, with 92.

As a result of his diamond dominance, Walls was selected as the Most Outstanding Pitcher in the WCBL. He received 18 first-place votes on 22 ballots, which were submitted by head coaches and media members who cover the league.

“I’m honoured and proud,” said Walls of receiving the award.

“I was able to spend several seasons in the WCBL and I’m very thankful for the opportunities it gave me to grow as a player and a person.”

Walls credited “newfound mentor” Geoff Freeborn – the pitching coach with the Miller Express - for much of his success this summer.

“We discussed everything that could happen between the foul lines and he challenged me to try new things. I was lucky to have him and I’m happy to call him a friend,” said Walls.

“I also had the pleasure of being on the best all-around staff that I’ve ever competed with, and they helped me to keep my head on a swivel each and every day.”

Heading into his final WCBL campaign, Walls approached the coaching staff about pitching every five days, similar to how Major League Baseball (MLB) pitchers set their schedule.

“That's something that is not usual for this league, but since he was a senior and he wasn't going back to school he trusted his body and he trusted that he could go every five days and give our bullpen a rest and help the other pitchers with their schedules as well,” said Michael Gonzalez, head coach of the Miller Express.

“He said he wanted to do that and with the way he goes about the weight room and the recovery after pitching, I knew that it wouldn't be a problem for him.”

Added Gonzalez: “I think Westin's work ethic was something that carried over to the rest of the pitching staff.”

Walls’ pitching helped set the tone for the Millers this summer.

Moose Jaw produced a 14-game winning streak that helped lift their overall record in the regular season to 41-15, which put them in first place in the East Division. The streak and the wins total were both franchise records.

“Just knowing that he was our guy and having the trust in his teammates and everyone oozing confidence in him, because he knew it was his last ride and so did the boys, so they wanted to go out there and give their best every time he was on the mound,” said Gonzalez.

“His personality is great. He's an older guy on our team, but he's like a kid, you know. He's just a big kid that wants to play the game and that's something that I appreciate from him.”

The high innings totals for Walls and the strikeout record – which eclipsed the mark of 91 strikeouts recorded by Josh Tucker of the Sylvan Lake Gulls in 2022 – saw the Central Methodist University student build on his previous summers in the WCBL.

Walls worked mainly out of the bullpen during the 2024 season, but two of his 10 appearances were starts. That year, he went 2-1 with four saves, a 3.80 ERA and 24 Ks in 23 2/3 innings.

In 2025, he embraced the role of a workhorse and an ace with the Millers. Through 72 1/3 innings, Walls was 4-5 with 89 strikeouts and one complete game.

As a member of the Eagles at Central Methodist University this year, the righty produced a 6-2 record, four complete games and 62 Ks in 67 2/3 innings.

Walls said the push to chase down the WCBL’s single-season K record was inspired by his father, Winston.

“The strikeout record was something that was really important to my dad,” he said.

“After getting so close last year, we both shared the understanding that it was achievable. However, he was convinced that having another season to chase it was all I needed. I don’t focus as much on result-based goals, but I didn’t have to. Halfway through the season, he had already calculated how many I needed each game, given that I stay healthy and continue to take the ball every fifth day.”

In claiming Most Outstanding Pitcher honours in the WCBL, Walls beat out Logan Lynch (Weyburn Beavers), Noah Bourgeois (Sylvan Lake Gulls), Kaegan Baker (Regina Red Sox) and Brody Forno (Okotoks Dawgs).

Previous award winners include Levi Abbott (Lethbridge Bulls), Colton Anderson (Regina Red Sox), Tyler Boudreau (Sylvan Lake Gulls) and Josh Tucker (Sylvan Lake Gulls).

Walls was not content to sit around at the conclusion of the 2026 WCBL season. He inked a deal to pitch in Lithuania and put together and impressive run for Kaunas Lituanica on their way to a championship title. Walls went 4-0 with four complete games, 52 strikeouts and a 0.67 ERA in his 27 innings, while holding opposing batters to a .044 batting average.

"It was a phenomenal experience. The people welcomed me with open arms and treated me like family," said Walls, who was able to set a personal high with 19 strikeouts in one game.

Walls is now back home and is set to put his workhorse skills in action at the Walls Family Farm.
