The Winnipeg Goldeyes have re-signed hometown left-hander Ben Onyshko.
The team made the announcement on social media on Monday.
The veteran southpaw, who started 2025 in the Mexican League, was a key member of the Goldeyes’ bullpen in 2024 when he posted a 1.03 ERA, while striking out 47 batters, in 42 2/3 innings in 30 appearances.
Selected in the 24th round of the 2018 MLB draft by the Seattle Mariners, Onyshko (Winnipeg, Man.) progressed as high as the triple-A level in the Mariners’ chain before he was released.
In 161 career appearances in the Mariners’ minor league ranks, the 28-year-old left-hander compiled an 8-12 record and a 4.75 ERA and recorded five saves.
Onyshko was originally chosen by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 16th round of the 2014 MLB draft but he declined to sign and instead headed to Stetson University where he toed the rubber for four seasons, registering 165 strikeouts in 139 2/3 innings. As a collegian, Onyshko was twice named to the ASUN Academic Honor Roll.
Prior to his college career, Onyshko honed his skills with the Junior National Team and at the Vauxhall Academy. He also pitched for Team Manitoba in the 2013 Canada Games, going 2-0 with a 1.53 ERA in 13 2/3 innings. During that tournament, he tossed a no-hitter against Nova Scotia.
Onyshko has also pitched for Canada at several international competitions, including at the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
With the addition of Onyshko, the Goldeyes now have five Canadian pitchers on their roster. The others are Landen Bourassa (Lethbridge, Alta.), Trevor Brigden (North York, Ont.), Landon Leach (Toronto, Ont.) and Will Sierra (Montreal, Que.).
The Goldeyes also have two Canadian position players – first baseman Matt Warkentin (Windsor, Ont.) and outfielder Jacob Robson (Windsor, Ont.).
