Official Amarillo Sod Poodles News Release

AMARILLO, Texas – Minor League Baseball announced on Thursday that Amarillo Sod Poodles outfielder Avery Owusu-Asiedu is the Texas League Player of the Month for August.

After joining the squad on August 11, Owusu-Asiedu (Saskatoon, Sask.) took the league by storm, putting his raw power on display while posting one of the most impressive months at the plate in Soddies’ history.

Over 18 games played in an Amarillo uniform in August, Owusu-Asiedu batted .435 (30-for-69) with 19 runs scored, five doubles, two triples, 11 home runs, 29 RBIs, and 12 walks while recording a .518 OBP and a 1.043 SLG, good for a 1.561 OPS.

Among Texas League batters (min. 70 plate appearances) for the month, he ranked first in total bases (72), home runs, RBIs, OBP, SLG, and OPS while tying for first in triples and tying for eighth in hits.

His double-A career got off to an incredible start as he homered in each of his first four games as a Sod Poodle, a stretch that included his second career multi-homer game on August 13 against Midland (Athletics). He continued to stay hot and pushed his hit streak to 14 games (8/11-8/26) – the second-longest hit streak by a Sod Poodle this season – with the final four games of that stretch including another four-game home run streak. In doing so, he became the first double-A player since 2018 (Will Smith, Tulsa) to post two separate four-game home run streaks in a single season.

Owusu-Asiedu tied a Soddies’ record for most home runs in a single calendar month (11), tying Manuel Pena’s May from earlier this season. His 29 RBIs in August also ranks second in Soddies’ history to Pena’s May (31), but his 72 total bases stand alone as the most in a single calendar month in club history.

An instrumental piece to the Sod Poodles’ push towards the Texas League playoffs, he is the second player to win Texas League Player of the Month this year (Pena, April). Furthermore, a Sod Poodle has now won Texas League Player of the Month for August in back-to-back seasons (Ryan Waldschmidt).

Owusu-Asiedu was acquired by the Diamondbacks from Philadelphia during the 2025 offseason in a one-for-one trade that sent former Sod Poodles left-hander Kyle Backhus to the Phillies.
