BRADENTON, Florida – A two-run sixth inning gave Brazil (2-0) a 3-2 lead and they hung on to defeat Canada (0-1) at the WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup at LECOM Park.

A bases loaded single off the bat of Brazil’s Nuno Borges scored the tying and go ahead runs in the sixth before Emannoel Madeira put the finishing touches on a tidy four-inning outing with a perfect seventh inning to earn the win.

Canada opened the scoring in the top of the first with Dylan O’Rae (Sarnia, Ont.) crossing home plate when Hugh Pinkney (Toronto, Ont.) reached on an error while starting pitcher Parker Burgess (Douro-Dummer, Ont.) tossed a scoreless first inning.

After a Sam Shaw (Victoria, BC) double and Max Hartman (St. Albert, Alta.) single put runners in scoring position with nobody out to start the second, Canada failed to cash any runs in before the skies opened up causing a rain delay that lasted nearly four hours. 

When play resumed Chase Marshall (White Rock, BC) took the mound for Canada, tossing a scoreless second inning and Cameron Chee-Aloy (Toronto, Ont.) tripled and scored on a Hugh Pinkney sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.

Brazil got on the scoreboard in the third with the bases loaded when a would be, inning double play throw was dropped by Marshall who was covering first base.

Marshall tossed two innings, allowing three hits and two walks with four strikeouts while Jack Pineau (Thunder Bay, Ont.) suffered the loss throwing 2 2/3 innings, allowing just one hit and recording one strikeout.

None of Brazil’s runs were earned.

Canada will play the Netherlands on Sunday at LECOM Park with the first pitch set for 11 a.m. E.T.
