TORONTO – Logan Cummins (Mississauga, Ont.) threw three excellent innings to lead Team Grey to a 6-3 victory over Team New Blue at the Canadian Futures Showcase at Rogers Centre on Wednesday.
Cummins, who will be draft eligible next year, is one of the top prospects at the annual gathering of young Canadian talent, now in its 11th edition. He had five strikeouts in three frames.
Michael Ham (Aylmer, Ont.) started for New Blue, tossing two hitless innings, with three strikeouts.
“I felt comfortable with my change-up and more of my off-speed,” said Cummins, after the game. “I did not have my best velo, but I did not walk that many batters and I think I did really well.”
Team Grey’s Daril Rodriguez (Red Deer, Alta.) and Quinn Carson (Oakville, Ont.) went down swinging against Ham, in the top of the second, while Caleb Quack (Breslau, Ont.) and Cohen Miller (Calgary) were strikeout victims for Cummins, as both pitchers were right on their game.
In the bottom of the third, Team Grey opened the scoring with three runs off Zach Duke (Burlington, Ont.).
Carter Bestebroer (Chilliwack, B.C.) reached on an error that scored Joey Khananisho (Kleinburg, Ont.) and Drazic Charbonneau (Montreal, Que.) for a 2-0 lead. Dayne Liske (Drayton Valley, Alta.) sacrificed home Evan Mabey (Stratford, P.E.I.) for a three-run cushion.
Liske was excited for the sacrifice, and the opportunity.
“I’m trying to go to college somewhere in the States and go from there,” he said afterwards. “I feel like I'm ready to go and excited for it.”
In the top of the fifth inning, Team New Blue scored its first run with Aiden Kilshaw (Saskatoon, Sask.) who came home after Miller’s sacrifice fly.
New Blue was back at it in the sixth, scoring two runs with Josue Gelinas (Trois Rivieres, Que.) coming home on a Quincy Jenkins (St. Albert, Alta.) single, and Hayden Payne (Brockville, Ont.) plating on a bases-loaded walk.
Grey added two in the bottom half when Evan York (Waterloo, Ont.) scored after Carson doubled, and a wild pitch by Tyson Kajmowicz (Calgary, Alta.) allowed Carson to score.
