Official Regina Red Sox News Release

Regina, Sask. — The Regina Red Sox are pleased to announce the return of Rye Pothakos as director of baseball operations and field manager for the season.

“Rye has been a major part of our organization for more than a decade,” said Gary Brotzel. “His ability to consistently recruit a strong lineup has kept our club in contention year after year. That was never more evident than last season, when he stepped in late to fill key holes in our lineup and ultimately helped bring a championship back to Regina.”

Pothakos will return for his 11th season with the Red Sox organization, continuing a tenure that has helped establish the club as one of the Western Canadian Baseball League’s most competitive programs.

During the 2025 season, Pothakos guided the Red Sox to a 29–27 regular season record and led the club to its third WCBL championship, further cementing his track record of success in the dugout and in roster construction.

Pothakos has served as the club’s director of ccouting and baseball operations for the past 10 seasons, playing a key role in player recruitment, development, and overall baseball strategy. His extensive experience and deep network across North America and internationally have consistently allowed the Red Sox to field a strong, competitive roster.

In addition to his work in Regina, Pothakos is an associate scout with the Kansas City Royals. A Canadian of Greek heritage, he has also made a significant impact on the international stage, having managed, coached, and scouted the Greek National Team from 2017 to 2021. Under his leadership, Greece returned to the European A Pool in 2021 and secured its place again for the 2023 A Pool competition.

A Saskatoon resident, Pothakos has previously served as director of recruiting for several organizations, including the Saskatoon Yellow Jackets (WMBL), Thunder Bay Whiskey Jacks (Northwoods League), Elmira Pioneers (New England League), and Regina Cyclones (Prairie League). He also serves as an advisor to the United States Professional League (USPL), an independent circuit based in Utica, Mich.

“I would like to thank the Red Sox organization for the opportunity to return as field manager in 2026,” said Pothakos. “I’m looking forward to another exciting year at Currie Field and working hard to provide our fans and community with another quality, talented team that we can all be very proud of.”
